I've been reading the posts about the Tom Thumb bit and just wondered how people find they compare to jointed pelhams. My horse is schooled in a Myler Comfort Snaffle but I don't find that it gives me enough control with faster work. I have tried her in a jointed pelham and find that this gives me more adaptability in her canter (in the snaffle it's either go or stop when jumping) but feel that it may be a little too severe for her. She isn't particularly strong, she just needs to respect a slight half halt to come back to me rather than me having to pull her teeth out in the snaffle (she is fine for flat work in it). At times in the pelham she has a tendency to come to a complete stop and bounce on the spot when I check her rather than collecting and moving forwards.

She isn't a young horse and has had a good level of schooling so it is not just a schooling issue. Does anyone have any experience/opinions/suggestions?

I use the tom thumb but with 2 reins, mainly use the snaffle ring but occassionaly give him a check with the lower shank. But our problem is mor of a bucking issue that going faster

i use a tom thumb copper roller on my mare. She is very strong. Locks on,swings her head and i find that i'm carrying her. i've just started using it and so far so good. my mare hates jointed pelhams. think it was to much for her. if i give her a chance to fight she will! it's the stroppy mare in her!
good luck!

i have a tom thumb-with a plain jointed mouthpiece and it has fixed sides with mini d-rings for the snaffle rein. if that makes any sense-i love this bit and find mine goes so much better in it than the pelham. i ride in one rein on the bottom ring as i need a little leverage-but you might find yours goes better in 2 reins and using the bottom rein when required?
