Part one of this article is what works for me - although I rinse in a 50-50 mix of white vinegar and hot (as hot as you can, avoiding the dock, obviously) water. It also does not condition the tail and leave it silky smooth, it leaves it like hedgehog spikes and you have to apply eleventy billion tonnes of mane and tail conditioner when you're done, but it works.
