have an old english sheepdog who I clipped on Thursday, since then have noticed her tongue is hanging out all the time, she cant seem to lap up water and is having trouble eating anything but really soft foods.Have checked all her teeth for loose/broken teeth and her gums for signs of infection/abscess nothing obvious,no change in her herself she is bright and running around, barking etc any ideas anyone will be seeking vets advice if she is still the same tomorrow

Strange! Could you give them a ring tonight, have they an on-call service? I'd just be a bit concerned if she can't drink, have you got a clean syringe so you could squirt some water in her mouth? Or even a teaspoon or something?

Could it be something with a trapped nerve or maybe she has disengaged her jaw somehow? Let us know how she gets on.

yes have been giving her water with a syringe as I know the dangers of dehydration, she has also had some soft chubb meat,so am not too worried about her food/fluid intake. Did wonder about her jaw being disengaged/dislocated but she is showing no signs of discomfort when I had a good look at her earlier. She is at the moment wrapped in a blanket on the lounge floor snoring, has anyone heard of them getting over tired and this happening as she cant seem to get comfy and relax now she's clipped. Thanks

She has no experience of this sort of thing before (long term OES owner!), has advised vet, as you have planned. I am sure it is nothing but best to put your mind at rest.

Thursday to today - Sunday with theses symptoms. VET. Out of interet how was she restrained when you clipped her?

Had Tess to the vets today and she diagnosed trigeminal neuritis, dropped jaw. Has advised us re fluid intake and liquidized foods, which we were doing anyway and she has to wear a muzzle for 2/3 weeks to support the lower jaw, poor girl. The condition is supposed to be transient so should resolve its self in about 3 weeks fingers crossed:(

I did the same when I got home, googled it for all it was worth, she is showing a lot of the symptoms, bless her. Am going along with the advice she gave although none of the websites I visited suggested muzzling. Will see how we goShe wants to see her in a week but hopefully the prognosis is good

so had Tess back to the vet on monday and she thinks there is some improvement as she is now starting to move her tongue and licking her nose, she still cant lap anything up and cant pick up food she drops. Am feeding her soaked biscuits with liver/sardines/chubb meat rolled into nuggets and popped into the back of her mouth, still giving her fluids in a syringe. still wearing her muzzle, which she hates and is making her nose sore. vet wants to see her again in 2 weeks unless I feel I need to go earlier:(

There is light at the end of the tunnel ,today for the first time in 2 weeks tess has made an attempt to feed herself. I had fed her soaked biscuits and chubb meat then she went and emptied merlin's dish ,had small pieces of chicken in, and has also been in the water bowl for a drink ,so things seem to be looking up. Fingers and everything else crossed
