After trying various bits mine went better in a NS Tranz Angled with a Myler bridle but it took a while to find that combo.

Interesting to read about the lameness issues as he did have a suspensory problem later on but maybe it was niggling the whole time, who knows !

Have you tried a curved bit? Most bits are straight and therefore I believe put more pressure on the tongue.

I had a mare who increased my bit collection. I finally found a bit she liked and I've used the same style on anything I've had since as they all go well in it. Not an expensive one, but a myler knock off. Will hunt for a link to it.View attachment 143874

Hi everyone! After months of experimenting, i have a few thoughts:
-the problem we had was not related to soreness/lameness (vet+physio checked)
-the problem wasn’t saddle related (saddle fitter checked it)
-I tried these bits with following results:
1. Bocca bits straight sweet iron Mullen with slight port = everything felt super amazing and relaxed UNTIL a slight pressure was applied, after that it was the classical tongue out, over the bit, stressed etc.
2. Fager Mattias baucher = felt really good, although it was really snugged and therefore at some moment I could feel him getting stressed a little bit (tongue sucked up) BUT he never pulled it over or out so a little progress, I ordered it in a bigger size and I think it’s gonna be good option.
3. Myler loose ring MB33 with low wide port = absolute winner!! Never pulled his tongue out/over/sucked it up. He’s feeling relaxed from the moment I pick the reins. Never fought it when wanting the connection and eventually collection. Besides the Bocca one this is the first bit I see him getting the foamy “lipstick”. So far I’m gonna stick with this one.

I'm glad the mb33 worked as well for you as it did for me. I'd had a very similar problem, pony with a thin very mobile tongue that disliked tongue pressure. Settled straight away with this bit. I originally got the one with slots as it was cheap on Ebay. It wasn't dressage legal so I then bought the same mouthpiece without slotted rings.

The only thing that my horse seemed comfortable in was a NS trans angled lozenge pelham. She had quite a big tongue/fleshy lips (typical of Dutch bred horses) and she was much happier in a thinner mouthpiece.

I think it was a 14mm instead of 16mm but years ago, so can't really remember.
