Tonight I fed raw for the first time.....

Interesting thread I started my greyhound Siimba on it about 6 months ago as vet thought his kidneys were packing up and he was losing loads of weight, it was suggested I try raw meat (not by my vets!!!)

He has put on 4 kilos in 3 months, coat is shining, teeth good and gone from a dog with a constantly suspect tummy that had accidents in the house to a clean dog. Would like to put other 2 on it but haven't found the solution to taking the required amount for 3 dogs away in the lorry when we go for 3 or 4 days.

Vets by the way amazed at difference although still insisting I should be balancing with biscuit - why? We purchase chicken carcases from our butcher and feed this mainly with eggs, mince and offal for variety. It works out about £3-4 a week.

Well fed my 2 mince meat last night and they hoovered it up. It normally takes them about 5 mins to eat their dinner gave them 500g each and it was gone in 2 seconds flat
Do you think 500g is enough for them they are Saffs and are only 8 months old so still growing.

I don't know how much they weigh? But mince is muscle meat so is quite high nutrition and that would be what I would give my two adults at around 20kg, though they would have egg and fish oil with it and a small amount of veg.

Standard Vet textbook reaction, because feeding them simply, naturally and cheaply cannot possibly work without some form of human intervention in the form of artificial cooked food could it ???

I live in hope that one day the reality might creep into mainstream veterinary thinking?? I think that Billinghurst's book should be compulsory reading on a vets course as a counterbalance to the input from commercial pet food companies wadda you think???

I would say they weigh around 15kg sorry don't have scales in my house due to my osd about my weight :( fed them 1 kilo of chicken wings tonight minus one as my beast cat nicked one wow bloody hell just watching hells kitchen and before GR tasted the pork and honey my son said it would be to sweet and he was right sorry to change subject :p will mix eggs into the mince tomorrow. Do you feed veg raw or cooked as my 2 will eat them raw

Yes know what you mean, I don't know where mine are and me + one of mine would break them! Only know their weight as on a routine vet visit I used the scales!!!

That should be fine but you might want to check up more on young dogs, they might need 2 meals a day, I rescue all mine so they are older when I get them.

My veg is raw, mine usually have spinach and carrot just a handful liquidised though I do chuck in table scraps now and again.

Oh and cats thrive on raw as well, but are harder to switch sometimes, sounds like yours is game though!!!

well I will try the cats as well and see how they go think the 3 younger ones will take to it not sure their mum will she is a bit fussy and will look into spliting dogs into 2 meals a day.

Ah yes, my vet hates me feeding mine raw, although can't argue that they always look great during thier annual checks and never have anything wrong with them. The lady I board them with also has strong views against feeding raw, and funnily enough used to be a veterinary nurse. The dogs love her kennels though, so when they board they get Orijen - closest I can find to mimick raw.
