I use a lozenge snaffle on my ex racer. It isn't the bit you have to use, its training him to not bite it and race off like he was originally taught to do. It will take time for ex racers to adjust to a new way of riding, but stick with simple :)

they are used in racing to stop a horse with a wind problem from lifting its tongue and putting extra pressure on the soft pallette which can then 'fold' and sort of choke the horse. As for re-training, the only difference is that it stops the horse putting its tongue over the bit and then tanking off with you. If your horse is pretty well mannered in that respect you shouldnt need it but its a snaffle bit not a 'hard' bit so it certainly wont do any harm. Dont over-bit an ex racer, it usually causes more problems than it fixes. Do as much as you can with as little as you can! The more you have on, the more they have to fight with! At the end of the day, it IS only a snaffle bit so wouldnt stop any horse, racer or not if they really wanted to go! The loose rings give a bit more control/leverage but put rubber 'biscuits' on the rings to stop pinching on soft thoroughbred skin. Sizing and fitting is exactly the same as a snaffle bit, the 'port' goes in first pointing toward the back of the throat.
