Hi, I'm thinking of getting rid of my trailer & Volvo for a 3.5t horsebox instead. It would be for my 15hh Welsh Cob alone. I've seen various opinions on here, some saying 3.5t boxes are for ponies only and some saying they travel 16.2hh horses in them.

The one I'm interested in has a small living area too, the dimensions of the horse area are:

Height 6'8 - 203cm

Width 6'7 - 200cm

Length 6'9 - 205cm

Would this be suitable? I'm going to view it at some point anyway but if it'll be definitely too small then it'll save me a journey to go and see it.

Thanks! :D

The key thing is the weight of your horse and stuff rather than would your horse actually physically fit okay as payload on the 3.5t lorries is not that great.

My 3.5t vauxhall movano is 7'1 high and 7'3" long in the horse area. My horse is 15.2 and she fits in fine. My friends 16.2 fits in but there's not much head room for her. Size wise your horse should fit fine... It's the weight you have to watch, especially if it has a 'living' area.

Measure your stable door height -at home and how easily / how much space is left when pony walks through it, that should give you a good idea to then compare with the height of the box to envisage.

Personally I think it will be big enough weight and dimension wise but it partly depends on how well and quietly they travel - a rearing 13 hand pony (let alone 15 hand) could hit their head even in a7ft plus headroom box

I've got a Renault Master conversion. 2 x 16.2 horse max the bumff said, obviously bearing in mind payload etc. Grooms area at the back. It happily takes 3 shetlands loose with the partition removed or 2 cobs with the partition in or, on a mercy dash, 1 x 17hh TB mare + 1 x skinny (unrelated) 4 month old foal. Engine does everything without a problem.
