Too big for a horse to compete?

Hey everyone!

I’m on the hunt for a new horse currently (I’ve leased for the past couple of years). I’ve looked at multiple, and I’m really interested in a TB or WB. I found a couple that I like, and I plan to test ride them soon, but I feel as if I may look too small/big on them. Here are the ones I found-
— 15.2hh TB mare
— 16.2hh Oldenburg gelding
— 16.2hh Dutch warmblood/shire X
— 15.3hh TB mare

I really like small horses rather than big horses. I feel fine riding anything above 14.3hh. I think I’ll try out all of them, but I am still growing. If I’m going to have a horse for about 6 years to event/show with, which do you recommend I test/buy?
(I’m also 93lb)

Thanks!

If you're seriously asking this then my gut reaction is none of them because you aren't ready to buy! Also you say you're 93lb (just over 6 1/2 stone) yet in another thread you say you're 5'9" which seems tall for that weight to me. Height and weight wise you'd be ok on any of them, but unless you're very strong in your position I suspect the 16.2s will be too much horse if you truly are 93lb.

try all of them, and buy whichever you feel the best on and hopefully the soundest! your legs are going to look longer on a finer type than a stocky type, even of the same height.

how it looks really doesn’t matter all that much, provided you can ride comfortably and the horse carries you comfortably - if you’re 93lbs, all of them will haha.

i’m 5”2 and used to ride a 16.3hh tb at college, looked like a pea on a drum but i got on with him far better than some of the 14hh ponies!

My bad! Typo!! I’m 5”4 right now, not 5”9 lol! And yes, I’m 93lb and trying to take on more, but I’m a pretty tiny person

Will depend how much more you’re likely to grow. I’m a similar height (but a lot heavier!) and 16.2h would be too big for me. It’s not just height and weight, but the conformation that goes with it. I rode a 16.3 warmblood for a while and my arms just weren’t long enough to be able to ride properly. Right now I think you’d find the 15.2 ones more suited and they could stay that way for some time yet. If you grow a lot taller, then later on you might want to switch up to a larger horse.
