Does it matter if a rug is a bit too big for a horse ? I wouldn't want to put a too small one on, but if it hangs over the bum a bit further is it a big deal ?Obviously wouldn't want one that was far too big at the neck.

if the rug is too big it's more likely to be trodden on and rip when rolling/getting up as the rear corner hangs down further.

I don't mind them a bit big at the back as long as the front fits and the surcingles are the correct length. I usually have to shorten surcingles, which always strikes me as strange when I have chunkier native types. Obviously there is a bit big and then there is drowned!

If the neck is too large just get your saddler to put a dart in it either side, takes up the slack.
It was one of the most common jobs I had to do on site at yards as I travelled round them with industrial sewing machines in my van. Surcingles, front straps and leg straps can easily be re positioned too for a better fit, in fact all of it can be altered to make it fit on site or as a Saddlers shop as long as the rug is clean and not carrying mud which knackers our machines.
