Hi,
Im 13, 5"8 and my cob is 14.1 and very chunky, personally i dont think im too big for him but lots of people have commented on how i am too big for him and have to sell him. Which makes me feel like i am too big for him but i do not want to sell him as i only got him a year ago and feel like i havent spend enough time with him. He is perfect for me in everyway and i love him very much but people have made me feel uncomfortable when i ride him because i feel like im hurting him even though i know i am not.
Am i too big?

I hugely doubt it! I have a rising 3 year old traditional cob, currently coming in at 14.2 and he's very chunky also. I'm not as tall as you (5'6") but I'm a big girl (13st 5) but he's a heavy weight and will be fine with my weight once he's grown up for another year (though I'm planning to slim down a bit before then!). I'm assuming you're lighter than me being 13 and all and the only thing I can think people are really looking at is possibly your height, but as long as you and horsey are both comfortable and happy, ignore the critics :) There's another cob at my yard who's about 14.1 and he's ridden by girls around your height and he's fine, even I've ridden him and he's probs about a medium weight so I'm sure you're ok. Any pics?

comments like that are normally out of jealousy! im on the opposite end of the scale. im 5ft and ride a 16.3!! i get co,mments on him being huge and pea on drum etc etc but i think we suit each other! IGNORE THEM AND ENJOY!

You will be very unlikely to weigh too much for a 14.1hh chunky cob. They are normally capable of carrying fairly massive weights. Certainly a good 12 or 13 stone shouldn't be too much of an issue if he is fit and healthy.

You will know when you are too tall for him, and that will depend a lot upon his conformation and yours!

I'm 5ft8" and can ride a 14.1hh cob without too much difficulty and I know a girl taller than me who rides a cob about that size too. Keep going until you find that you balance and/or position are compromised.

It will become noticeable when you are too big, you legs will knock his or you will find rising trot difficult, or you will find it difficult to get your leg on without raising your heel, or you will feel unstable in jumping position. While you are comfortable ignore what is being said!

Katt's right.
if he's sturdy then he'll be well up to a lot of weight, and your height won't bother him at all, but if you get too long-legged for him and you jump him, you might get to the stage where you have to ride very short, or risk knocking the fences down with your feet!
if in doubt, post a pic of you on him.

I'm the same height as you (a little older ;) ) and would happily ride a 14.1 HW cob. My rising 3yr old is a coloured HW cob, standing about 14.2 at the mo.

You will probably look a little tall on him but unless you're heavy (i.e 15st+) it's highly unlikely you're too 'heavy' for him. Being too heavy for him would be a problem - being 'too tall' is really just cosmetic!

As everyone said above just ignore them i'm not as tall as you i'm only 5ft2 but i currently have a 13.2hh, a 12.3hh and an 11.2hh. There prob jelous you have such a nice pony. :D :D :D

Rubbish. I'm the same height as you 5'8". This weekend I sat on my pony for the first time. he's a 13.2hh Fell pony and I was crossing everything I wouldn't look silly (I know he's fine weight wise). I think we look fine:

Go with how you feel. No, I don't think on any level you'd be too heavy for him being a cob, but you may very well get too tall for him and look out of proportion which is what people could be on about possibly.
My welsh cob mare is 14.2hh and at the time when I got her I didn't feel that she was too small me despite people saying she was. However, I decided 2 years ago she was too small for me and she is now out on loan to a young girl doing pony club :) However, I was 18 in the end when I decided she was too small so she did me well bless her and was the best pony in my view as she taught me pretty much everything.
I'm now a complete big horse fanatic though and detest riding ponies or anything small, got to be 17hh+ now haha....so may be biased lol.

As long as you have fun, that's the main thing :)

As others have said, ignore them. I ride a chunky 14.2hh, have had her since I was 11yrs old, I am now almost 29 and 5'6. I have had people ask me why I have not bought a horse instead, answer is I do not want or need anything bigger, not everyone wants a horse!
This kind of thing does get right on my nerves, some people need to accept we all want different things in life, including different horses. Sorry, rant over, bottom line is they are talking nonsense.

Hi,
Im exactly the same height as you. I ride a 17hher but when my friends pony(14hh) gets a bit strong for her I jump on and show her whos boss. Its down to what you feel because you definately do not look to big! I just prefer the feel of big paces even if it does take me a mounting block to get on. Ignore what people say, you will know when you are too big :D
