Too Cold to Bath - Now What???

Help people. I am off to a show tomorrow morning. My pony hasnt been bathed for a few weeks and lives out so is not clean. I cant bath her now as she shivers at the best of times and id feel so mean. Have you seen the weather!!

She is bay but still im showing so ive got to make an effort.
Has anyone got any tricks of how to make her look clean and shiny without a full bathing?

Just put a damp sponge over her to get the worst of the dust off.

Although if it's as wet with you as it is with me at the moment - and the horse is already wet - just stick a little shampoo on and rinse off. She'll dry overnight in the stable with a good cooler.

No thanks for that yes i guess some hard grooming will do it but also as AmyMay says i think she'll be cold and wet by the time i get her in anyway so i could just brush some shampoo over her and tuck her up for bed!
 
Wash her tail, it's never too cold for that if you manage it carefully, and if you don't it will be noticable. Ditto white markings, although if you're knee-deep in mud...
Baby oil is dreadful stuff, but if you've got it and nothing else, a careful wipe around key points (like clean dark hocks, eyebrows, a dribble in the tail etc.) will give a hint of a sheen.
At the last minute, a wipe-over with a damp (not wet) cloth.

But nothing beats a good old fashioned thorough grooming, sorry!

Ok thats sounds ok. When she's been clipped i use baby oil? Do you think this is a good idea?

or a little washing up liquid in the water. Ive just got to take the surface dirt off. Although looking at the weather for tomorrow, goodness knows why im bothering!!
 
Ok no baby oil. No white markings so im lucky with that. Maybe just a good tail wash and mane will look ok and as everyone says elbow grease URGH!!

i sometimes give a really good groom then hot water with a little vinegar! and then just wash the mane and tail

Easy solutions are fine for horses who live in - I wouldn't strip the coat of oils in a horse who is living out. They need this oil for protection. A good brush will take out the dust and dirt and should make her shine but without stripping the coat.

OK im sorted ill wash mane and tail and wipe over with a warm damp cloth tonight then tomorrow morning (big sigh) ill give her a 'proper' groom!

Aren't there any kids knocking about the place that you can enslave? They usually love prettyfying our equine chums, plus then you get to delegate(ie do nowt) while they have fun(get the horse clean)!?!

If you want a really clean horse, sorry but get the hose pipe out and go to work - I am really an evil mother!! It is not that cold and a fleece on as soon as you are finished and you will have the result you are seeking.

PS I do have my bucket of soapy water warm!
 
I would get a big bucket of warm water with added vinegar (I find its excellent for sprucing up and giving my black horse a shine) and sponge him down with it. Id do him half with a rug over the other half as I did it. Then spray on lots of coat shine (missing the saddle area of course).
 
Give your horse a bath... If he/she lives out they'll be used to getting wet! Its not that cold if you compare to winter!!
