Too cold to clip outside?

My friend's asked me to clip her horse on Monday. It's supposed to rain and be pretty windy, so I suggested Tuesday (the day makes no odds to either of us, really), as it's allegedly going to be sunny and calm, but apparently it's now too cold to clip outside anyway...

Given that we don't have access to heat lamps or a centrally heated stable block, would you prefer to clip outside on a sunny day or in a poorly lit stable on a grey day? Can it make that much difference in terms of temperature? He has his rug over the bits that aren't being done anyway.

I clip when I have time........ (and horse is vaguely clean and dry!)

we have a good hangover the stables so prefer not to do in proper rain but if only drizzle its fine.

Well admittedly she's a native, but over the past week in between showers, I've clipped one of our ponies outside. It would have been too dark in the stable. Yes it was very windy. I managed to finish off her face and the fiddly bits yesterday when the wind had dropped before the rain came. Just another one to go now.

I don't think it's too cold, I couldn't put a rug over mine because it was too windy it would have blown off. Horse will let you know when its had enough...

Yes, he'll let me know when he's had enough in no uncertain terms, probably when I'm doing an armpit or something ... *sigh*!

Just wondering how the poor thing will manage to keep warm the next day when he's walking out all naked with his invalid friend

Heat Lamps and a CH Stable Block? !!!!!
Horses have coped perfectly well being clipped in the late part of the 19th Century and all through the 20th without these.
I would advise not to clip in artificial light - the result would be tram lines which then would have to be removed in daylight anyway. Quarter as you go so that the clipped bits are kept warm before fully rugging up.

Sorry, my sarcasm re heat lamps didn't come across well in my OP...!

Left to myself, I would clip on Tuesday and do all the things you suggest; I'm just struggling to understand how it can be too cold to clip outside when the temperature in his stable is identical to within half a degree? And it'll be far colder tomorrow IMO with the wind chill anyway. And he has to survive all the rest of the winter clipped... It just seemed like a bizarre thing to say. I'm beginning to think that none of her horses will ever be allowed out of their rugs again if a flake of snow falls ... they're not people, so why are we treating them like it?

Anyway, I'm going to clip indoors because she wants me to and then be grateful I don't have to be seen in public with the results

I clipped on friday, and it was dry but very grey. I clipped in a stable with bedding all swept back! Poor lighting but was easy enough to clip, and my horse is a darkish bay!!

I dont cover when I clip as as long as he has hay he is happy, and i hot rag afterwards to get rid of lines/loose hair and to warm him up

he is a tb btw

and is out in field today!

wind chill shouldnt be a factor when your in the stable

I should maybe have said that the stables are in a converted open-front barn and have only half-height front and party walls - it can get pretty windy in there...

It's all a bit moot, anyway, since my friend's made her wishes clear enough. I was just bemused by the whole temperature thing.

Poor you - and your sarcasm was absolutely justified.
The reason so many horses have bugs, viruses, coughs, colds, etc, etc these days IS because some half-wits treat them as human beings.
They are not, they are horses and more than capable of surviving without totally idiotic extras.
I just hope that "she" does not tell anyone in the vicinity just who clipped her nag!!! Obviously another of the "goo-goo baby" fraternity.
I would be mortified if something I had clipped appeared in public with tram lines.

Fortunately I don't clip for money anymore so at least if she spreads the word it won't matter much! She thinks I'm a bit obsessive about turnout as it is, and doesn't mind tramlines herself

I'll just slink away and pretend I wasn't involved...
