Too hot to ride?

Yes still riding, but I ride after work so cooler and will ride early at the weekend. I also try to avoid the really hot times as I have 3 dogs with me who are not happy being dragged around in the blazing sun..

Hi,

IMHO it depends on where you ride - we're lucky that the hacking is under cover.

My lad has been rested the last few days with an injury - nothing major just been keeping an eye on it - I have lunged him in the school which has been in the full heat - but he's gone well.

Without the injury I would have ridden him as our hacking is in oak/birch woodland and 80% shade - I would only walk him in the other 20% mainly because it's uncomfortable and i don't want him to sweat up and both of us be miserable.

Personally I preferred the rain - (good soft ground) - Am really fed up with the unpredictable conditions and no steady build up to the heat so we can get used to it.

:D

I also hack under cover and school on hacks. Have ridden every day this week either early morning or in the evening - my boy is a very good doer and needs to be in full work, plus we're getting fit for cubbing!

no I ride whatever the weather....just don't canter on hard ground & will try to ride earlier or late depending on work hours. i just hose off and if he sweats a lot give him electrolytes in his feed. my boy drinks from any water source so no concerns there. :-)

Fortunately we are off work at the moment so the horses get riden first thing in the morning, washed off & then turned out for the rest of the day. It's still warm at 7.30/8.00am but it's certainly cooler to ride then than later in the day.

Do not fret over the heat. We will soon be back to the 11.5 months of winter/rain/puddles/crap/rubbish that we know and love

The previous 2 days i've managed to drag myself out of bed at 6 to ride before work when its been cooler. Its been too hot to ride after work - if i'm too hot i'd feel unfair making horses work in it!

I've been riding as normal0 had a jump lesson on Tuesday and have been out hacking too, trotting up lots of steep hills.

Yes, he gets sweaty but sweat isn't bad for them!
He gets a good wash and has had no ill effects at all.

As long as your horse is fit enough for the work he is asked to do, the heat shouldn't pose a problem.

I ride either at 7am or 7pm - during my jumping lesson last night it was still 30deg +, but my horse copes better than I do as he was born here :)

Are you finding British temps a bit cool or just pleasant at the moment? What kind of temperature was average in Brazil? Do you have a horse here? Is horse keeping much different? I am so nosey, sorry. I know I had a real culture shock horse wise moving from the UK to North America.

Well this week was great! I cannot complain!

In Sao Paulo (I am not going to say Brazil because, as you know, the country is HUGE so I cannot give you an "average" temperature), the seasons are reversed, so winter is in July and summer is in December. That said, the coldest it can get in Sao Paulo is about 9C, in the early morning. During the day it will be about 14C. During summer it may well reach 28C. But it will rain almost everyday.

I lived in Sao Paulo for close to two years. Before that we were in Venezuela. In Caracas, the capital, the temperature is perfect and stable year-round. between 18C and 28C, very low humidity.

I also lived in Boston for 9 years and the winters there are crazy cold. Much worse than here I have heard. I have been in England for less than 6months!

I don't have a horse here yet. Practically just got a house! But hope to get into a riding school here after things settle for us. Probably next year. I did ride in Sao Paulo and had a horse in Caracas where I did show-jumping and some dressage. I guess once a horse person, always a horse person :)

I have been riding still - I get to the yard at about 6pm and am usually riding by around 7pm. It has been rather warm and yes we have been a bit hot on occasion (like the earlier comment about big fat horses finiding it more difficult...just like the riders :) - applies to me more than horse lol), but it has done us both good and she gets a good hose down after so i don't see how it could do any harm. I don't think I'd ride in the middle of the day at the moment though....although I do have a jump lesson at 10am tomorrow. Hopefully it wont be tooo hot then!

Haven't been able to ride her this week due to her freezemark, but on a normal hot week I'd have had to as she gets nutty if she's not exercised daily. I wouldn't have wanted to ride midday when it's very hot (more for me than her!) but would have got up at 6/7am and ridden then so that we've finished before it gets too bad.

We had PC camp this week (DD and 11.2 pony!) I have been so hot running around with them (leadrein!!) that I have not known where to put myself! Sticking my head in the water trough helped but by golly was I pleased it only lasted for 3 days! Albeit those 3 days were the hottest days of the year so far!

I ride in all weather; I compete regularly and can't pick and choose the weather I compete in so it gets my horses aclimatised to different weathers.

When it is very hot they all get washed down (although they are washed down after every session anyway) and electrolytes in their feed. Never had any problems at all and all are raring to go even in the heat we have been having.

I've ridden three evenings this week. Waited 'till as late as possible and made good use of the shade from the trees surrounding the school! Wanted to hack, but too hot for that where we are, plus this way I could just do twenty minutes or so
