Too hot to ride?

I'm just trying to ride earlier than usual so we are done by 10 latest, then he gets washed off, cooling gel applied to his legs, then hosed, and I stick him out in the field with a fly rug on. Slightly dreading dressage on saturday, I am praying for an early time and he's only doing one test but even so, a very short warm up and lots of water will be order of the day!

For those asking about Electrolytes, I use Nuun when I'm cycling, they are little tablets you just add to your water, really
Nice light flavours and come in a tube of 12 so easy to tuck in your pocket- no sugar too so nothing nasty in there.

I rode at about 8pm last night, still warm but decided to just get on with it, worse bit was the flies though, they were savage!
Going to have a little hack out this eve, will wait until about 6, not sure it will make much difference though!
Again I compete him, albeit only once a month and figure sometimes it does him good to work in all conditions.

I tried to ride at 6pm last night, but Win was in such a mood there was no point, might try again tonight about the same time.

I rode Zac about 4.00 today as very over cast here with bit of a breeze, managed twenty minutes then we vx had both had enough. Flys are relentless, turned him out covered in fly spray and poor boy was charging round the field, so put his fly rug on. It seemed to help a bit. have now got a huge horse fly bite on my elbow, trying not to scratch

I don't enjoy riding in the heat and neither does my boy....so we don't!! Horseflies are now upon us too which makes it a miserable experience as well...

What we both enjoy is the hosepipe!! LOL

Remember the Spanish do NOT ride in the real heat of the day. They themselves are having their siesta!
Like other riders who are riding now in the UK, they go outside early, and will perhaps ride in a shady indoor school until 10 ish, and then resume again well after 5 p.m.
Stables which look out onto the yard are also fitted with external curtains to give the horse inside a completely shady environment.
