M horse has been off for the past 2 and a half months so has been left to get hairy.

Is it too late to do a last clip of the winter? He isnt THAT hairy, in comparison to some, but dont know what to do.

No, it's not too late, many show horses will have only just had their coats off to prepare for the season. Better to clip than have to mess about drying him off every time you ride I would have thought, will be more comfortable for him too!

i was thinking about clipping mine for this year (first time) as she looks like a mammoth i was always told feb was the last clip to make sure that you didn't interfear(sp) with the summer coat but i know alot of people that clip after that as well

No not too late, I clip my dressage/show horse in Jan and have done it in early Feb just before his summer coat starts coming through. Not had any problems.

I keep my elderly cob gelding clipped all year round as he has very thick hair and looks like a yak, and is prone to skin conditions and mud fever.

You can clip. But as we are due some really cold weather by the end of the month is it really worth doing it now?

Last clip is end Feb/beg Mar for mine and i show both of them without a problem, if i clip now then they moult cat hairs for ages before their summer coat comes thru...

FWIW, our clipping lady (who shows) said it's nonsense about clipping late spoiling the summer coat. If you think about it, I s'pose they moult to some degree all year round, like whenever you brush your hair, a little bit will come out? So even when they've got their summer coat, it will keep replacing itself to some extent?

Yes, because I am bringing him back into work.

Fully agree with this. In my experience it's absolute tosh that clipping late affects the summer coat. We have always clipped our horses up until April or May and they always have wonderful coats.

If you clip, the hair just grows back again either as summer hair or winter hair depending on what time of year it is!!

What a coincidence! I've only this morning given one of mine a trace clip. He's only just come back into work yesterday. I was considering leaving him until he's working harder, but after only 15 minutes of low intensity lunging he was heating up.

I normally have all the horses that aren't roughed off, clipped every six weeks or so with the last clip at the beginning of March, I haven't noticed any difference in their summer coats whatsoever, despite being told the last clip should be around Valentines Day.

I clipped my very old lad on Wed.

The poor love still has his belly and legs on (to protect him from the wind whipping up under his rug).

So, he will get another clip all over a bit later on, hopefully when the coldest of the weather has ended.

Milly will get a full clip at that time too, as be buggered if I am brushing her winter moult out! She has been moutling all through winter anyway. It looks like it is snowing when you brush her as it is!

No, I re-clipped mine only yesterday. Will probably clip them again as spring comes as well. But then Ive been known to clip one of mine all year round (he events). And the 2 natives will get trace clips in March/April for the summer because they're old nowadays and never loose the winter hair off their tums!
