General opinion please. My cob x is back in decent work after a quiet winter, hence I didn't clip him. He's getting quite sweaty and was thinking of just clipping off a bib. Just from under his chin and the front of his chest, but he's already loosing his coat and don't want to ruin his summer coat, do you think it's too late?

I would say you might just be ok to do him now; obviously there are many who are clipped all year, so there is no real cut off in time! He may be a little less shiny when his summer coat comes through, but seeing as you are only taking a bib clip, you should be fine! nicer than leaving him to get all sweaty anyway

Personally, if he's already loosing this coat, I'd prefer to grin-and-bear. Can only be a few weeks until he'll be molted out. Really depends on whether you'd mind risking a lasting effect to his summer coat, though, because when we had a piebald show cob he was clipped out all year (and hogged) and that was fine as it suited him.

It really depends on whether you mind ruining some of his summer coat it will just be slightly less shiny. personally i would leave it and wait a couple of weeks for him to loose his coat so that he has a nice summer coat.

I would say it's a bit late as well I'm afraid. I'm sure it won't take long for him to moult - quite a few at the yard I'm at are moulting crazily already!

Depends on what you plan to do with him in the summer?

Ive been known to clip mine all year round. I clip one of mine during the summer usually as he events so on hot days its a god send for him I think. Some others clip all year round too.

I give trace clips to my 2 old natives usually mid-March as it starts to get warmer since they are older now and dont loose the hair from their tums so easily!

My boy was clipped this week, so no moutling coat for me!!!

Just make sure you do a full clip otherwise you'll end up with a line for half the summer.

Sorry hate to disagree with everyone but i dont think clipping now necessarily ruins their summer coats..... ( believe me i REALLY do not like to disagree..... )

I have posted on similar subjects before but i clip my minis from march till September as they are shown clipped and ive never had a dull coat as you can see......
