Just caught my father in law heading into my field to give my sports horse 2 baguettes!!!! I do not want him being over fed as he is already fed twice a day granules and is still in a field with grass. He took the three kids with him who all wanted to feed him, which caused a problem in its self when I said he can't eat that much. Had to be cruel to father in law and say he could kill him by over feeding. A bit extreme but know if not harsh he will sneak food in and I will end up with over weight horse or worse colic. Was I right or too mean??

A little treat now and again won't do any harm, I have been told horses shouldn't have bread, and two baguettes is a bit much :)
Depending on how much the father inlaw gives your horse, i doubt that he will get overweight, if he's a sport horse. At the end of the day it's your horse and if you don't want him having loads of treats then he should repect your wishes. Maybe you could let him brush him instead?

I think one of the risks with feeding bread is that it can cause choke, although during the drought in Australia, bread that was well dried was one of the forage alternatives suggested, (mind you they also suggested cardboard too!)

I have problems with people feeding my horse as she is kept beside a public footpath, lots were ignoring the please do not feed signs, but once I explained the dangers of feeding (one laminitic, one gets choke) then people were much more co-operative. Still have the odd numpty who thinks it's fine to feed them though.

Why not get him to give your horse his 'proper' feed, then you can control his diet and not upset the father in law too much.

We had terrible trouble with people feeding ours when they were at livery near public footpaths. One of ours had dreadful food allergies and was nearly pts before we worked out what they were! One elderly man brought half a white sliced loaf for her and got very shirty when we asked him not to feed the horses, seemed to think it was like a 'petting zoo'. These days I would tell him I'll follow him home and have my picnic in his kitchen, while feeding razor blades to his dog! :p

It really annoys me as I don't want him being fed anything other than what he is supposed to eat. People think they are like pet dogs or something but its just not the same. I will say they can give his ration instead and the odd carrott when I say so. Agghghghghgh just very wound up by it!!!!

i have to disagree with the fact alittle can be given , i was speaking to my farrier about this and he said most people think its ok to give a horse little bits of bread but in fact it can cause colic etc even at the smallist amounts given
