I like the Oster rake it is really good but only if you never want to plait up because is snaps the hair rather than pulling it so you end up with shorted bits.
My mare hates having her mane pulled so if it get too long i cut it (yes with scissors, shock horror) then go over it with the rake and it looks pulled and lies flat.
(waits for the horrified gasps to stop> if you don't use scissors it will take you months to do it all! Cut it a good few inches longer than you actually want it and solo comb the rest. Below is a picture of my boy when I got him- granted his mane was the least of his problems- but I wanted you to see that I can empathise
Gave up pulling as firstly it hurt me - hair is like fuse wire!! and it grows to fast and she looks so much prettier with a long mane!! Have tried hogging (was a bit butch) and when it was pulled i used to cut it first with scissors and then finish of with solo comb and thinning knife - would take about 2-3 days as there is so much of it!!
