Can you ever feed too many carrots with / instead of hard feed? I am trying to keep weight off my very very new cob. He is not used to grass so I have done my best to limit that but not very well as he is happier out (and I am soft) so I am giving him hay in the stable, a tiny handful of hard feed (low fibre) and substituting with carrots as I dont want him thinking he has a mean mummy - how soppy do I sound? Am I doing anything wrong?

I believe carrots have quite a high sugar content, sure people who know more about lamanitic care will be able to help, but I wouldn't feed them if he's very overweight. And do you mean high fibre? As that would be better

You should be feeding high fibre feed - such as hi-fibre cubes. Carrots are high in natural sugar. One or two are ok, but don't feed too many. Laminitics should not be fed carrots.

Thanks both of you, much appreciated. He is not laminitic but I am scared of laminitis as I have seen so many friends struggle with it. I shall remove his breakfast carrots immediately! He has healthy hooves (dengies) and safe and sound (16+) to choose from. I am only feeding hard feed whilst he is having some time in the stable, roll on t/o 24/7 i.e. when I am brave enough to let him stay out 247 and mingle with the other horses!

H is out 24/7 and he is getting no feed whatsoever, he is given a token 1/4 apple in the morn whilst the others on the yard eat.

have to be cruel to be kind !!!! he is round and I am trying my hardest to ride more often
