Am currently feeding Alpha A Oil been feeding it for about a month - but have noticed that she is weeing then after a minute going again! this morning she tried to go again but didnt seem able to. also her urine has a strong smell - She seems fine in herself but just wondering if there is too much protien causing her kidneys to be overworked - she is 19 years old. What are your thoughts please?

I personally wouldn't think this was the alfa oil. I'd be having a chat with your vet, could be a slight infection. I wouldnt have thought the protein levels in Alfa oil were enough to trigger such a response

How much Alfa A Oil are you feeding? Alfalfa products can lead to increased urination, but usually when fed in large quantities, such as when fed as a partial or full hay replacer, rather than the few handfuls of chaff people mix with their hard feed.

Could she be in season? Or slightly dehydrated?

From what you've said about the amount of AlfaA being fed I doubt it's causing symptoms of excess protein.

If you know she's definitely not in season and the problem continues for more than another day or so, I'd speak to her vet for further advice.

You can't tell. The vet maybe needs to do blood test or ask about other possible symptoms. If the horse keeps trying to wee even though she's only just been, and she hasn't always been like this, then presumably there's something wrong. The least you should do is phone your vet to discuss whether they need to visit. Or you could ignore the problem and hope it goes away. The Alfa a is unlikely to be causing a problem in the quantities you are feeding it. If the amount you feed is causing a problem with protein levels then I would suggest your horse may have an underlying health problem anyway.
