Too optimistic? Competiting a horse for someone?

I have started college this year, and do not have my own horse.

I am not a professional rider by any means, but I'm not incompetent!

College have lots of college teams, BUT, you are not allowed to do it unless you have your own horse 🤔 One is just an academy where you go out and compete and another is the college team for against other colleges.

There is nothing else to do, unless you do in hand showing and tack and turnout, which is not my cup of tea ...

I was wondering if anyone has let someone compete there horse for them and if it's ever been a thing? I don't have masses of time and money, but I'd really like to compete and thought I'd have a chance at college but I was wrong.

My yo's daughter events my horse. It works for both of us, one of her horses was injured and my horse loves jumping whereas I don't. I'm not sure I would want someone I didn't know competing tho. It works as obviously she is a yard already and rides him at home too

If I had my own horse again now I'd let someone compete it.

I enjoyed it as a kid but as I got a bit older I started to not enjoy it at all - the early starts, the prep, seeing horribly over-competitive people etc.!

I see it as a win-win - someone gets a horse to ride, and I get comp miles on the clock (thus adding value!) to my horse.

I can easily provide references for people by instructors, family friends and people I've had loans from.

I'd happily pay all competition fees etc providing it would be a decent horse, but would struggle to get around, so would be reliant on the owner to have transport. Would this be a deal breaker?

Thank you for responses!

I used to SJ a horse for someone whilst I was in college and also doing my BHS exams. The owner only wanted to show and do dressage but the horse, a Sec D, loved SJ so I used to jump it (we competed up to Newcomer level) and the owner loved to see her horse doing this. She used to do all of the schooling work and we'd compete the horse twice a week. I only had to turn up and ride. The owner would transport the horse, pay entry fees and all expenses and I got to keep any prize money. We had this arrangement for about 4 or 5 years and it worked really well for both of us. We stopped because I then had a full time job and the horse was then in his late teens so needed easing back. Also if I wanted to compete in PC or RC area comps she was more than happy for me to ride him in these. We had great fun!

Thank you everyone for the responses!

I have more hope now then, going to have a look around my local area and maybe post on Facebook, see if I get a response!

I have really enjoyed having my horses competed by a friend, she has shown and evented my hunters and now has a young horse which she is bringing on who I have never sat on. If you find the right person and get a good relationship it could work out well for both of you.
