Both of mine Welsh D x ID and ISH have been out without a rug for the past week with no issues.. if the weather changes drastically (ie wet and windy) I’ll reassess but they’ve both been fine. Unless yours is a particularly wussy cob I’m sure he’ll be fine too!

My hairy Connie is out naked, although he has a mud jacket which is probably keeping him very warm! It's so mild here that I'm thinking of taking my TB's rug off too.

Depending where you are your cob will probably be happier naked than rugged.

I have taken my furry cobs rug off, I'm a little worried, but he has got a lot of blubber to potentially keep him warm?
Providing he isn't recently fully clipped and we don't have a blizzard he'll be fine.
If you think he might be cold at any point give a bit extra forage to warm from the inside.

Thankyou for all your replies, me and my cob are in Pembrokeshire! It's just wet and windy at the moment, he hasn't ever been fully clipped and isn't of any sort clipped at the moment, my only worry is that he had been wearing a full turnout rug since October/November and he hasn't got a 'proper' winter coat

Yes, he definitely is happier out naked rolling in mud (just adds to the grooming job!) But worth it if he's happy

Mine's been too hot with a blanket clip, so all that came off today. He's out in a no-fill or a 50g, and is quite happy. Please can the cold weather come back?

I took my retired IDs rug off about 3 weeks ago when it stopped raining. He was out in -8 with no issues, I only rug when it starts endless rain . He lives out .

My WB has been out in a 50g for weeks now. When it got very cold he went to a 100g but he's a very hot horse anyway. I reckon he'll do fine next winter without a rug at all.

At the moment he's out in a no fill, been 9, 10 and 11 during the day here.

I question why a fat fluffy cob has been wearing a full rug all winter anyway!

FWIW my rising 4yo sport horse did a little work prior to Christmas, she tends to overweight but no where near cob levels. Had a bib clip. Went out full time at Christmas in a 50g no neck and had that through the worse of the big freeze.

It’s been off and she has been naked the last 2 weeks.

Maybe to keep it clean? Op doesn’t say rug weight.
Also maybe circumstances dictate it’s easier to rug, my native doesn’t ‘need’ a rug but if it rains he does shiver and is miserable for days after. He’s had a rain sheet on all winter.

My clipped fat shetland x cob is naked unless it's pouring down, she is always warm. I did rug her just after the clip but within a week she was flinging herself against walls trying to get the rug off.

Only our fully clipped horses are wearing rugs now and only at night (I've left everything out 24/7 since the rain stopped - we have so much grass I am saving a fortune on hay/haylage) ... more seriously, you know your horse. Rugs aren't "on for good" or "off for good" ... you put it on when he needs it, you take it off when he doesn't.

I know it's warm the cows are rubbing so badly, because they are sweating overnight, so I may have to turn them out as they destroy everything. The fat ponies are starting to leave their hay, and mooch more.
