my little collie has taken it upon herself to teach herself things for e.g.

I have a field behind my house, we go there for short toilet breaks/ball games first/last thing at night, she has so much interest in her ball toilet breaks are deemed unnecessary, so I play with her ball till she's panting, then walk to the other side of the field putting her ball in my pocket, she will then have a wee etc, I walk around the whole field giving her a 10 minutes of sniffs & zooming time and then go back to the centre to play some more ball, well now as I start to walk to the other side of the field Spam will run ahead, have a wee/poo and run right around the field fast as she can back to where I stand to throw ball and waits and waits while I still walk around, so she misses out on sniffs, but I guess she has got her breath back.

I use one of them long ball launcher things to throw her ball, if for any reason I put it above my head, Spam decides thats game over and runs for home, wether I intended us to go back home or not :rolleyes:

Every time I lock the back door, she will get into her crate, I haven't asked her to get into her crate since about May when we realised she was non destructive and housetrained, when we get home tho she's always on the sofa :D

sometimes I just wonder what is going through her mind when she does these things lol

have any of your dogs taught themselves any (un)clever things?
 
Any repetition reinforces something or teaches a dog something :) sometimes we humans forget to mix things up for them and surprise them!

Big dog learned to count :p because I always asked for a sit or down out of motion at ten steps so he started to lower himself after eight steps :p

Little dog learned to scweam and scweam and throw tantrums in order to evade doing anything, but we're past that stage now :p I hope :p
He identifies being elevated with being fed so he will hop up on any park bench, picnic table etc, which should be fun when summer comes around :o
He goes through his entire range of commands when he is hungry to try and activate the jackpot.
I've unwittingly taught him a lot of bad habits!!
 
well the back field is only used as a short toilet break, with a bit of play, our daytime walk is for the mixed up surprisy stuff

the running around the field and crate I can understand as learned repetition but as far as I am aware I have never lifted the launcher above my head as a signal for us to go home lol
 
I stop at my parents one night a week, I was up later than them one night and was on the laptop, the dogs were all sprawled around the lounge snoozing, I finished reading e-mails etc and shut the lid of laptop down, as soon as it clicked shut suddenly there were 4 cavaliers dashing for there crate!
Told my mum this in te morning and she said that when she shuts laptop that they have learnt that that means bedtime!
It did make me laugh :)
I love the thought of your dog hurtling round the field to hurry you up for play time!! :)
 
Awww, she clearly loves her ball!

My dog starts salivating and licking her lips as soon as I touch her face... because when I pick off her eye bogeys with my finger I always let her lick them off... This is an icky custom she clearly enjoys :D
 
hehe it didn't make me laugh, I went a bit green *barfs* lol

Talking of ball mad I was fast asleep last night about 4 am I felt something on my head, half asleep I reach around thinking what on earth is that, its only Spam dropping her ball on me, 'come on mum playtime' .... I deffinately didn't teach her that lol
