Last night I was picking at a chunk of what I thought was plaque in noodles mouth but it seemed to be coming away with a chunk of her tooth attached, she's at the vets this afternoon for them to assess but I expect she will be going back for 1 or 2 teeth out. Anyone give me any ideas of her post op recovery, what food is best, how long till it's healed and back to normal etc?

Jonna had to have a tooth removed last year, I was recommended to buy some canned food for her, and feed her that for 10 to 14 days afterwards. Besides soft food, and some pain medication (ETA don't remember if there was also pills against infection), it was just the usual, try to keep an eye on it so that it doesn't get infected, and that it starts to heal.

In general, count on 10 to 14 days before she can start to have hard food, gnaw bones, and similar again.

But of course there can be variations. For example Jonna was around 14 years old when she went through the tooth extraction surgery last year, and I think her old age had to do with her wound healing a bit slower at the start. As I recall it, we had to go back to the veterinarian after some days for them to have a look at it, and I was given 4 syringes, so I could gently flush clean the area with homemade salt solution. (I was given 4 in case she would damage one or more of them when I was fiddling around in her mouth, I only needed 1.)
Maybe it was a bit slower to start to heal, but it didn't seem to bother her. She seemed to think my fiddling with cleaning the wound was unnecessary, however, she accepted it stoically, and eventually it did heal.

Another example, one of my late dogs who broke a tooth by accident (bit on a piece of metal on a harness/lead on one of the other dogs out on a walk) when she was only a few years old, as I remember it, her wound looked quite healed after around 7 days.

Hope all goes well with your dog, and that her recovery goes smoothly.

P dog had 5 out in 2016 3 months after I got her (from rescue, they paid half bill, was expecting2 out) and another 4 out last year when expecting 2. Cost about 5-600 each time. Shes not young, estimated as 'over 10, aged' at vets. Likely to have been a breeding bitch previously.
She was on soft food for the next day but then on vets advice straight back onto her usual fare of 50/50 meat and biscuits. Antibiotic course, check twice daily for anything not right (swelling, bleeding, discomfort etc)
She bounced back each time :) Hope all goes well with yours x

Thanks fuzzy, she wasn't acting like she was in any pain, still begging constantly for food, chewing on antlers etc and not at all fussed at my prodding so hopefully it's not as bad as it looked, think OH is going to have a meltdown soon about vet costs...

Well the vet said there was a lot of movement and she probably has a dead tooth that's split in half but until she is under anaesthetic they can't really tell, so back next week for them to sort it properly.

Seth greyhound is booked in for a tooth extraction next Wednesday. This will be the third time he has had teeth removed, the first time it was 25 teeth and then 10 months later another two.

Both times he has come home with metacam for a few days. I fed him chappie for a week or so until he wanted soaked kibble.

Hmmm last time I didn't ask the price for a dental beforehand it was £550!

As I have greyhounds my dogs have had dozens of dentals over the years, it has cost me many thousands of pounds! I find they are always fine afterwards - I always have Metacam in the house so pop some into them if they are feeling a bit sore, but they pick up really quickly. The only time I had one who made a fuss was when my greyhound boy had 18 teeth out and was castrated at the same time (to add insult to injury!) - the vets used by the rescue charity who did the work discharged him with no pain relief so I whipped him up to my own vets immediately for them to review. He did dribble an awful lot with that many out!

To be honest I have never bothered with soft food afterwards for any of them - I appreciate that it is recommended, but every single one of my dogs have come home, demanded their tea, and eaten it immediately with no fuss. That'e regardless of whether it was kibble or raw.

My spaniel had 13 taken out last year, due to coming from a puppy farm breeding background. She now has only 6 teeth in her head the rest I think fell out previously as her gums were in a dreadful state, but she never showed any pain. She had antibiotics for a short time, fed her soft food, she didnt seem to notice she'd had them out !she still doesnt have stuff like bonio or hard dental chews

Our elderly border terrier had 19 teeth out last year. Vet advised to feed his regular dry food because they don't chew it anyway. He recovered very well and still enjoys his dental chews.

Same here, when Sasha longdog had many teeth out she ate normal food from the next day. I usually do feed chicken or something the night after a GA but it was straight back to normal otherwise, Shape at bedtime and everything.

You can use well and good dental wipes. It will help her.

Well she's now gone and got a bad tummy, so waiting for the vets to call to check she can still go in tomorrow, she hasn't vomitted since Sunday afternoon, just horrible diarrhea yesterday and this morning but not sure if they will put her under anaesthetic if there's a risk of vomitting so she may have to wait.
