Hi, my 1st post so hope I'm doing things right! I'm just after a bit of help with my 4y Welsh C. Everything's been going great with his training & he's just started to be backed - again he's been great but in the last few weeks he's been awful with his bit. Initially last yr at first understandably he struggled as had a lot of teeth coming in/out & so I gave him a lot of time off & that was fine. This year his mouth has settled & he's accepted his new full cheek with sweet-iron mouthpiece really well (it's got copper stripes) whilst being backed. He's had a layoff whilst I've had a problem whilst the saddler was getting the saddle in for him & since we've come back to things he just seems to be really awful in his mouth - he lols his tongue around all the time minus bit, accepts the bit fine but when I lead him off the bit he resents that where he didn't before. I've had the dentist - he was sedated & he worked on him for an hour (he was still not easy to do) - he said he had a couple of sharp hooks which he took off but he had 2 upper canines in & no lower ones through, he thought 1 at least was due to erupt on the bottom, though I can see absolutely no signs, no redness etc, so I wonder if its this? Would this make him this bad? I can't see the bit is impacting on any teeth (not that he'll really let me look). I'm just really disappointed about this & I'm not really sure what to do to help now.

One of mine had problems with canines erupting. I gave him time off to let them come through as they were obviously bothering him and he was constantly playing with his tongue and putting his head on one side with the tongue out. On mine, you could see bumps where they should have come through but they didn't, I got the vet to take a look and he needed a bit of gum cut away to allow them to erupt. I think they're irritating/painful irrespective of the bit and the horse is not going to be able to accept the bit while the mouth is in general uncomfortable. Yours don't sound as obvious as mine but I would get a vet to take a look and possibly take xrays if there is no sign of the teeth trying to erupt.

My gelding also had a rough time when his canines erupted so he had time off.

I've just changed bit and think its a fail because its catching on the canines so bear that in mind as well

thank you for this, it's reassuring to know other people, or rather their horses! have had the same issues. It must be v uncomfortable, yes. I did give him a lot of time off with more 'obvious' teeth issues (the incisors) & did stuff just with a headcollar & he was v happy with that. I was thinking about getting the vet to have a look so I'll go with that as a plan just to make sure :)

Thanks..yes I was thinking about the bit - he was happy in the sweet iron full cheek before but maybe I'll have to have a re-think. I can't see that it may be catching on the canines but he's really not actually letting me look to properly check.
