I have an 8 year old TB x Argy mare who was kicked in the sinus as a foal, the tooth was broken and although she had reconstructive surgery the tooth wasn't removed due to worries about infection. I'm now looking at the possibilty of removing the tooth and my insurance obviously won't cover this. Can I ask if anyone has had a tooth removed under anaesthetic in horsepital and if so what sort of costs did you have to pay ?

Around £1500 - 2,000 I expect.

Did the x-rays show that this is what was causing the continual production of pus??

Wow that's crazy I can't afford that !!! :(
I'm waiting for the dentist to speak to a specialist she knows who may be able to sort the tooth without surgery xxx

Had an unerupted wolf tooth removed it was £150 for dentist and cost of sedation and call out from the vet, think about £300 in total

Lot of difference between standing sedation and GA. I would think the OP's horse might need to be down.

To give you an idea on just the GA

My horse recently underwent a 5 hour operation. The first atheistic was £575, he was then re-antithesed (sp?) to keep him under presumably at a cost of £793. Also my invoice covers surgical assistant, obviously we also had a vet to put him under, and a surgeon too.

He is insured.

But your talking £1000's.

Any GA for any reason is a big deal, with a big price tag.

I'm still footing a bill as we went over the insurance limit. But they have paid out the full £3500 (good ol' petplan)

If I didn't have insurance I would of got a loan, or a credit card. I would of found a way.

But then I have no dependables, ie. no mortgage to pay, no children to come first.

I understand sometimes it is impossible to turn your life and your finances upside down at a risk to your family, for a horse.

I'll go with this, ectopic wolftooth removal inc. x-rays and sedation, £360.

A friends horse had an enormous, diseased molar removed, through the mouth with standing sedation £1000 for a 4 hour operation, another similar through the side, £500.

I thought one of ours was going to have to have an infected tooth removed but it responded to antibiotics, our vet said if he had to have it done at the dick it would be about £800. I was expecting it to be much more.

Molar removed at the dick standing under deep sedation was around £ 1300 with X-rays on the day but excluding the MRI scans and the follow up from the vet at home was told expect in the region of 2000 to 2300 if he had needed the GA.
The whole tooth incident cost just short of £4000.

Yup, as per my post. With any op under GA I would expect big money... :(

Our vets just sedate and remove wolf teeth and broken molars, cant see why it needs a GA and so expensive.

My pony has a half missing one on the top at the back, to get to it vets would need to drill/ cut quite a large hole in his forehead then push out the bits from the top of his jaw. There is no way this could be done under sedation!
