Top 10 dog breeds dumped

I don't know how Yorkies took over Huskies/Akitas, pounds are full of both these breeds in NI whereas there are very few YTs in rescue here.

Bears zero resemblance to the statistics in our rescue, border collies and labs would come well below mongrels, and getting any springers in is very rare indeed up here. We get bucketfuls of rotties, and quite a few akitas and american bulls.

98 medium sized mongrels sounds REALLY low to me for a whole year.

We do get lots and lots of JRTs though, and they are usually nuisances.

I would wager a lot arent correctly identified, I cant believe they had 250 border collies but only 97 crossbreeds.. I bet a lot of those labs and collies were "lab-ish" or "collie-ish"

X-post, here's the latest list from a council pound near me:

I was surprised to see GSD in the top ten. When we were looking last year we struggled to find one in a rescue centre.

I think these stats are a little skewed as the Blue Cross tend to identify a GSD as any dog that might have been crossed with a german shepherd. For example the following comes up in a search for a GSD:

I assume they do this with all breeds.

The top 5 sounds about right for my area,(but suspect the order would be different),from what I've seen and heard anwyay.

I think staffies and collies (and cross breeds of) would be in the top two slots,by far the most prevalent in rescues around here.

Wonder how it compares to missing / stolen dogs and how many were that rather than dumped originally? We've still not found Lily (a Parsons RT) and from what I see PRT / JRT and other similar breeds especially locally seem to be high on the "lost" list.

I'm surprised at the jack russell but like others assume that its the small cross breeds that follow 'type' rather than the true breed, such a shame. people always assume a small dog will be low maintenance but JR are full of energy and need a job.

The ones that do surprise me are the spaniels. They are pretty high demand at the moment I am constantly getting enquiries for them but I suppose cute as puppies and poor training for another gundog breed that needs a job, plus health might be a reason. Such a shame they are lovely fun dogs and given the right jobs are a real asset. They certainly can't all be rejected gun dogs.

I looked at the list thinking to myself "I wonder if they count Lurcher as a breed? - and if they do, then they're bound to be near the top of the list". No surprises there then!

No surprised mongrels are on the way up with all the cross breeds about and Jack Russells again anything remotely terrier crossed can be classed as one.

Just an update for anyone who expressed concern - it is really valuable when volunteers/rescues go to pounds and take pics/advertise dogs in there on FB!

Obvs surrenders when they are cute and young, get rehomed very quickly.
The strays have to stay for a designated period to allow for reclaiming.

There are still a shocking amount of people who confuse council pounds and rescue organisations though :(
Putting a dog in a pound is NOT sending it to rescue!

matches the pounds around us spot on...theres an increase in the amount of nothern breeds huskys etc but tge terriers, collies and labs feature ever week....and not just crosses theres equally as many pedigree animals as crossbreeds or mongrels ib the pounds here in ireland.in the last 2 week there were 4 husky pups around 12 weeks old some 2 shih zu crosss pups 2 lurcher pups and 4 or 5 jrt type terrier and dozens of adult dogs of every type and size. thats just one pound of 20 or so.They come up on my Facebook page every week and some of the stories are heartbreaking..thankfully a rescue works out of that pound so the kill rates arent as bad as some council pounds where most dogs entering die.

There's a lot of huskies on FB at the mo, using my instinct for detection :p as well as being dumped because they can be terribly annoying and make rubbush pets :p I would hazard a guess that people get them, treat them like any other breed, let them off the lead and lose them forthwith.

SHWA have dealt with precisely twice as many sibes this January as they did last year and it's only halfway through the month. And these are the ones voluntarily relinquished into rescue, as said there seem to be a lot cropping up in pounds. KC registrations for them have more than doubled in 10 years, can only imagine the numbers involved with the unreg ones as well. They make utterly crap pets. :o

Just for interest - a list of the dogs currently in my kennel block (not the whole sanctuary.. just my block)
