Top 5 breeds.

Probably a good thing they're banned; imagine all those numpties who think pit bulls make them look 'hard' with a dog twice the size and weight!!

The Dogo was originally bred here in Cordoba

I love so many, can't put them in order!

Alaskan Malamute (mine is fab and has the best character) Golden Retriever (my beloved Oliver who i lost last year), Dobermanns, Wiermarners, Bassett Hounds (my sister has one) in fact i could go on forever!!

1) Lagotto Romagnolo - because I have one! Not many people now about them but they are lovely dogs or at least I think they are.
2) Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
3) Springer spaniel
4) Flat coat retriever
5) Hungarian Vizsla

Not sure why your American friends would be surprised about the press Pitbulls get in England; they are also banned up here in Canada and many cities in the States have banned them from entering or living within the city limits.

They have just as bad a reputation over here as they have in England. I do agree though, all of the ones I have met have been big soppy things.

I don't think they're anymore agressive than any other breed of dog, its just the injuries they cause are always serious because of the way they bite and the power behind them.

By definition they are definitely more aggressive than other types of dogs - they are fighting dogs and fighting was what they were specifically bred for.

I disagree.

Hounds are used for killing, lurchers are used for killing, wolfhounds are capable of killing wolves - it doesn't make them agressive dogs though!

How does a pitbull born into a family home know it is a fighter?

And would you expect a homebred Arab to be totally quiet and calm because you had it to become a toddlers pony? Bloodlines of course. No different to any other species of animal.

An arab is as quiet as its handler

Mum used to be sec to the AHS and trained a couple of arabs, she had an extremely quiet gelding. You watch something thats been shown in hand full of snort and blow go onto a ridden career and it becomes as mannerly as a hack. Azari is a fine example.

1. Malinois - but not the drippy, useless, English bred ones!
2. Tervueren - drive you barmy but highly addictive & great fun!
3. Anatolian Karabash - still waiting & hoping....maybe one day!
4. Berger de la Beauce - always wanted one of these!
5. Border Collie - that's ISDS registered, working or trials bred, not some stuffy show bred thing as thick as two short planks.....& sorry, but a WSD is NOT the same thing at all!

Horses for courses- you wouldnt expect a supermodel to win a Nobel prize would you(not that one couldnt...

)?
Shame that with so many breeds the lines have become distinct and separate.
It is what it is a should be able to do the job it was bred for IMO.

Hmm, not sure!
They are also big dog lovers(ones that know their stuff not tree hugger types) and dont have a bad thing to say about pitts.

Same trouble as with most breeds, the good ones are fab the poorly bred crap are a nightmare. Many have had the devil dog tag over the years because they become popular and were overbred by people after cash without the best intrests of the breed at heart.

An Arab is as quiet as it's breeding and bloodlines will allow. DNA and genetic makeup is what is at play here - why else do you think that people crossbreed horses so often? Same as dogs; they are bred for a purpose and to perfect their genetic traits.

1) St Bernard (because mine has a personality unlike any dog Ive known)

2) Labrador (again I have one, he is the most loyal and well behaved dog

3) Alaskan Malamute

4) Foxhounds

5) Neoplolitan Masiff

What the heck has bacteria that got to do with a horse one minute being full of snort and blow and prancing at the end of a 15ft lead rein to it having the manners of a hack...stay on track Tia please.

A dog is only as good as its owner as is a horse!

I am the one on track - I think you may wish to brush up on your breeding skills, and why we breed particular horses for particular jobs....as with dogs.

Totally and completely disagree. Sometimes yes, sometimes no; but certainly not a given.

Prove the unprovable to me then? Give me a pitbull puppy(bred with fighting lines) and I'll prove my point.

Okay so you don't understand the concept of breeding and predetermined genetic traits.

All domestic animals are bred for a purpose - each purpose can be totally different from another, hence the reason we have so many breeds of domestic animals. Nature/nurture has never been proven, however breed traits over averages of certain breeds, have been.

Just because I have a working bred dog who is genetically imprinted to be a killer - does not mean that she will be a killer because I am nurturing her - but it also does not mean that she definitely won't be. She carries centuries worth of this breed instinct and under extreme provocation who is to say that this dog will revert to her natural instincts OR she will remain loyal to her nurturing. No-one can until she has lived her life faultlessly. This is why dogs like her are not encouraged amongst people who are not able to offer a life suited (or as close to) to her breed traits.

That's also why people who have huskies press the point to others about the quirks and troubles they can have with these dogs unless they make a job for them. It doesn't matter how nice and kind you are to your husky - the likelihood of it running away from you if you let it off the lead, is very high.....because it is bred to run!

My favourite Breeds are:

1. Boxer - I will never buy another breed after owning Meggie & now Lucy, i absolutely adore the breed.

2.Cairn terrier
3.Weimaraner
4.Great Dane (never owned one, but i have always wanted a blue great dane)
5. Boston Terrier (Never really knew about the breed until i came on HHO, but Prose & Stella have converted me to the breed, they look fabulous!!)
