I normally travel with the top door of my trailer open (most events I go to are within an hours travelling time) however I am planning on going further afield and was wondering should I close it, or perhaps open it for 1hr close for half open again etc!! I know I can and do travel in travelling rug but someone told me about a horse suffering facial paralasis (sp?) due to travelling with top door open?!

Ive seen a few trailers with the front top door open recently. I deffinately wouldnt do it. Ok Im a bit of a worrier but at 30/40 mph the wind must be awful and what if something went in his eye at that speed, even a fly. Id shut the door and take the rug off.
If its the back door then I shut the one on the road side but that was only because my horse is Mr Spooky. I left them both open with my previous horses.

I saw someone on the motorway with the top front door of their trailer open the other day and the pone's nose poking out...eek! I would say depends on the weather really, and if you're travelling one or two persons. If it's hot and/or you've got two bods in there, leave both back doors open, if it's rainy/a bit chilly just leave one door open.

Echo everyone else..........sorry, but I would never travel mine with the front door open, even just 5 mins down the road.

I tried travelling mine with the top door open yesterday and I def won't be doing that again. Having thought of the eyes situation I put his fly mask on. It's a single trailer - a mare and foal version so not terribly narrow.

Down the drive at 2 mph head out and in not terribly worried. 2 mins down road a hell of a commotion in the back (horse is a quiet traveller) and I see that the leadrope is hanging out of the trailer without a horse attached.

Pull over saying to OH we had to grab him before he tried to turn around. Open jockey door to be presented with a horse bottom and a very stressed out one at that. Horse isn't a great loader so I tried to get him to turn back but he couldn't. I got shoved half out of the jockey door - which was shut - breaking handle and giant bruise on leg.

Had to unload and load again on the road - thankfully horse complied. Shut top door!!! And got to show late, missed my class and ended up jumping instead of showing!

I travelled a friends mare (at her request) like this no problems last week but will not be doing it again with any horse!

Oh dear! better keep the top door closed from now on- was always worried about the constant wind but never thought about objects getting into their eyes etc.... Again thanks for all your comments
