Top rider weight for a 16.1 TB with good bone

Considering recent H+H posts about horses winning with over 13st on their backs, I think that would be a very easy weight for said tb to carry! If he's got truely good bone, 16 stone man should be easy for him to carry providing he isn't just lugged on and off on a days hunting-(although tbh he'd probably cope with that too.. if he's a true large boned tb)

personally if it was a regular rider I too would say 13 13.5 st. jockeys have amazing balance and do not ride the horse 4 to 6 times a week for years!!

Thanks, he has hunted with men, and a man used to own him but I am not sure what he weighed. It just seems that more and more people are saying certain horses are not up to carrying the weight. I have seen at least 2Tb and TBx for sale at approx the 16 -16.2 mark that say no one over 10 stone, this seems a little silly to me. And they say riders are getting heavier, so all we are going to see are shires carrying amyone over 10 stone lol

He'ld definately be able to take over 10 stone. I range around the 12 stone mark, and ride 15.2 cobs, sometimes even smaller and they're all fine carrying my weight,

9 inches of bone? 14 stone or so as long as he's fit and the rider isn't rubbish and his tack fits correctly.

TBs are up to more than people think. NH horses have to carry 11 ish to race so you can bet your bottom dollar they're up to more than that for a hack!

I used to share a 16.1hh TB. Wasn't fine but didnt have huge amount of bone. At the time i think i was around 11stone and half the time he acted like i wasnt even on his back. As some others have said, i think it also depends on how balanced the rider is.

I have a 16.1hh tb and was horrified by a post yesterday that said only skinny people can ride tbs I am a size 14 and weigh between 12-12.5st (yuck hate admitting that) and have owned my mare for 7 years and done a bit of everything, judging by her behaviour sometimes I really don't think she has a lot of trouble carrying me although I will say I keep her fit and muscled and if she has any time off I make sure I bring her back into work carefully with lots of quality groundwork! Here are some pics, do you think I look too big?? (runs and hides too scared to see answer!)

Try weight tape, find out how much he is (when in normal condition), and for a regular rider, aim for a rider to weigh max 15-20% his weight including tack.

Lots of things can be taken into account when you consider weight, the horse's health/previous injuries/conformation/age/build/level of fitness/workload, size/shape/balance of rider... and, perhaps also on whether one takes a long term perspective (e.g. if one aims for the horse to push 30 it is natural to be more conservative in all aspects of use?)

I often wonder wehre the 13/14 stone comes from-seems to often be the average female weight plus a stone or two, i.e so your 'average' looking person people woudl feel comfortable with-not based on any expereinces really or actual knowledge..

God no, you look fab together - no worries there

9'' of bone sounds a lot for a 16.1 TB! My chunky 16.3 ID X doesn't have that much bone!

My dad has a 15.3 skinny legged TB and he's about 11 1/2 and they are fine - but don't think he's want to hunt/jump big stuff on him.

I'd say 13 maybe 14 stone - depending on what your doing.

Why do people say, well my horse messes about with me on him, so he must be ok with carrying my weight? 'Messing about' is no barometer of whether a horse is struggling or not. Horses may 'mess about' more with a fatty on them 'cos they're trying to ditch them and get the weight off their poor backs. And by the way, this isn't aimed at you emmaln, as you look perfectly fine on your horse and I can't see where you're hiding 12 stone!

Thanks Interesting about the weight tape, but I wonder fi that works for all breeds? Arabs are not my thing but you see a few heavy ish riders on them, and people say they are good weight carriers, but to look at them you wouldn’t think it

Re Arabs - their shorter backs will make them more able to carry weight and I've also heard that their legs are stronger because some gap in them is thinner than in other breeds thereby making them stronger (that might not be true - and not very scientifically put- be interested if any Arab enthusiasts on here can comment on that...).

My 16.1hh Tb has 8.5 inch of bone - the same as my Lw/MW cob previous to him.

I weigh 12stone - sadly- and I am currently dieting this away and he is fine with me, we jump courses and dressage and go for long hacks. His back is checked by the physio now annually as he is so well and she says he has never looked better.

I would say my boy would carry a max of 13 on a regualr occasion provided his well being was checked regulaurly.

i no this is alot and it would seem alot to me and i weigh more then most people would put on a horse. but in theory from what it says in that article a 520kg horse if fit could carry 18 to 20 stone, so why do people say 10 stone if a 16hh plus horses limit. i no tbs arnt weight carryers but still

If I remember correctly arabs have denser bones, something to do with a denser arrangement of something that I want to call ocelots, but I KNOW thats not right :D

I would have no issue with 15 stone of balanced rider on a 16.1 tb with good bone. Maybe not for a days hunting, but certainly for your average leisure type riding.

My 14.1hh 75% arab mare would happily carry 14 stone. Shes not particularly short in the back, but shes VERY wide across the loins, has short cannon bones and reasonable basic conformation. I don't ask her to carry that weight, mainly due to an historic tendon problem, and the fact that I lost a lot of weight when I bought her  But she certainly has no issue at all with 12stone plus tack :)
