Hi,
This is just a general post?
when a rider competes at shows and does well (mostly winning!) they always take their hats off and usually gallop round the arena for the lap of honour!
NOW i understand that this is a great tradition of riders but should it be allowed - especially as it sets an example to the younger genaration thatb it is cool to ride WITHOUT a hat - this is a major issue as in the arena anything could happen and the horse could spook at anything and the rider could fall-off...
under safety rules in BHS rule books you should always wear a hat when riding?
Any thoughts on this issue?
Thanks,

BHS rules, BRC rules, BSJA rules, BD rules, BE rules - they all vary to a degree. I think at that level - it is at the discretion of the rider. When they get to that status I think they know their horses well enough - are used to those atmosphere's - they probably take (especially the eventers) a bigger risk whilst jumping/x-c - but ultimately, its their decision and their risk.

good god, they are taking their hats off to the crowd, a measure of appreciation..are you to suggest that graduates keep their mortar boards on for H+S reasons. haha

Surely to be correct, it's only men, as they should! a woman doesn't need to!!
I don't have a problem with it, most of them prob. never bother to ride with a hat on at home anyway! it's their head, they can do what they want with it!!

Yes its part of the razzmatazz and its nice for the spectators to get a glimpse of bald head ( in the case of some top SJ'ers )

They are at the top of their game and well aware of safety issues.

It isn't unexplainable at all! Males take off their hats when acknowledging people, hence why they take off their hats to acknowledge the applause - it is that simple! You seldom see women do it, I wouldn't, but I would if I were male.

yes, it is dangerous and un-explainable!

Has there EVER been an incident in these circumstances? Its one thing looking at XC safety as there are statistics to back it up but have there ever been any injurys at all from someone taking their hat off on the lap of honour?

Yes I think if they want to they can.

And I am a H&S person!!!!!

Personally I would look a spac in a hairnet and no hat so I would keep mine on!

Perhaps Lewis hamilton should be stopped from driving fast as it sets a bad example to young male drivers.

Personal choice seems to be terminally ill theses days.
