I feed George baileys lo-cal, didn't affect his behaviour at all (thank goodness) but here we are in Nov and he's still shining like a new pin and the farrier has recently commented that his feet have improved!
Baileys gave me a comparison sheet. TopSpec has more:
protein (including lysine)
oil
energy
zinc
selenium
biotin
vit B12
folic acid
vit A
vit D
than Lo-Cal. But Lo-Cal has more:
fibre
calcium
phosphorus
copper
iron
than TopSpec. That's according to Baileys though - for example I was told that TopSpec had 15mg/kg of biotin in it, but according to Baileys it has 30mg/kg and Lo-Cal has 18mg/kg. Anyway apparently those are the differences, plus it's about 50p/day to feed Lo-Cal according to Baileys, and 75p/day to feed TopSpec. I can't realistically afford TopSpec so opted for the Lo-Cal.
I buy Topspec for 28.95 a bag and it lasts me 6weks. I was still having to feed a fair amount with Lo cal, which I dont with TS and Goddy's feet are so much better on TS, so tbh I think I am financially better off with TS!!
i've used both, and found that for keeping weight under control the lo-cal was better, but that for just topping up vits and mins etc the topspec marginally had the edge.
if i was just using it for topping up vits and mins then i would use naf pink powder as its the same sort of spec, but without the fillers that are needed to make it into pellets, so you get better value for money.
Going to through a spanner in the works,,, met the Red Mills rep today, they reckon their balancer is as good as the two you mention, and a lot cheaper. Haven't checked the spec, expect you can find it on the website.
I changed from formula 4 feet to top spec when I got my second beastie, as I couldn't afford to keep both on f4f. Both are looking good and the farrier hasn't complained about the geldings feet being any worse
I fed Top Spec to my horse and it badly affected his temperament. He became completely nervous and stressed. I am led to believe it's the amino acids that can affect them, and Top Spec is high in these.
I tried both cos I wanted something small that I could feed to grass kept horses.
Top Spec gave my lad the runs real bad and he ended up losing weight. He's been fine since he's been off it. Not sure what that's in the Top Spec caused it, but he's not the first I've heard of. The other 5 got on OK with it though.
We feed the Lo Cal now, with straights if they're working, and they're all fine on that. It's done the job for us as their feed are very small. Actually, two of them have a lick thing instead and we don't feed them at all.
Have used local for about 5 years and my boy is blooming! Has lovely feet and sparkle without exploding. My pony was on in for a few years before he passed away and went from killer to cute Welsh D
I've recently changed from Lo Cal to Top Spec as going into winter my mare just needed that little bit extra. You need to feed more of the lo-cal (3 cups compared to 2 of the TS) so although a bag costs less it doesn't really work out much more economical. However have to say the Lo-Cal has made a vast improvement on her feet this summer, even my farrier commented on how good they were looking last week.
