After taking advice from here (thanks everyone) and doing a bit of research, I have bought a bag of Top spec balancer for my horse.

But...what do you feed with it?

He might need an extra bit of oomph for hunting once a month. We will be doing dressage (just prelim), hacking and schooling in between.

Thanks in advance.

What are you feeding him at the moment, I would suggest a chaff and the balancer and see how he goes, before deciding if he needs a higher energy feed. Ring there helpline, if you are tottaly confused. If he's fit enough then he should be fine for the hunting, and he can always have a couple off days off after to recover.

He is just on alfa a at the moment.

He is new to me - he was overweight and a bit loopy when he came home about 10 weeks ago, so I cut out the hard feed he was on at his old home (stud balancer) and just gave him grass during the day, hay at night and a token bucket of a handful of alfa a.

He now looks fab but lacks a bit of oompf.

I would see how he goes on the balancer and Alfa-A, could perhaps add some oil? He may just be a laid back horse the one I had last year hunted with me at least once a week and aprt from some fidget moments he never really had oomph what ever I feed him, but was a very good hunter, but we did have discussions at some fences mostly due to him coming in rather slow, the fitter he was the more forward he was as he had the energy but I would never off called him a forward thinking horse really, but he was lovely.

Mine gets it just with a small amount of calmcondition cubes as he is on box rest/restricted turnout atm.

I used to feed mine Allen and Page Power and Performance when I was competing for added oomph :)

mine gets his mug topspec lite and literally a sprinkle of chaff (teacup full) - v forward out hunting on this !! still on grass no hay or haylage

Soaked beet and alfalfa pellets - the latter are cheaper than chaff (denser, lower transport costs) and can be fed with no chaff if it's a low starch feed. Just check the energy and nutrient value is roughly the same as the chaff, or adjust diet accordingly.

I feed my 7 year old eventer (just at RC level at mo though) who is also quite forward thinking on 2 1/4 mugs of Top Spec comprehensive and a level scoop of Alfa A. He is turned out 24/7 and will get haylage when the weather really turns. If he needs something more for weight I'll add in either sugar beet or Top Specs cool condition cubes.

You don't state which of the Top Spec balancers you're giving yours, but if its the Comprehensive I don't think you'll need to give him anything else to get some more oommph.

Which balancer are you feeding, i.e. comprehensive, leisure time etc?

I feed the leisure time with non mollassed alpha a and a few top spec cool condition cubes. He looks fab on it. He is a poor doer and is a happy hacker. I fed him comprehensive balancer to begin with and he looked amazing! If yours is a good doer, you may not need to feed the recommended amounts though. I noticed a difference in about 3 weeks.
