I feed Spillers Senior Conditioning Mix to my old lad and he looks amazing on it. He is 30 years young. This is Hadleigh last year.

Have to admit I don't weigh it

but he gets a scoop in each of his feeds, is fed twice a day. He also gets a scoop of Baileys No 1 and 1/2 a scoop of Baileys conditioning mix and a scoop of Alfa A oil.
He has Codlivine with joint supplement and ,as his arthritis has got worse, a scoop of Maxaflex.

Another vote for Spillers. They do a Senior Conditioning Mix and - for good doers - a Senior Maintenance Mix. Both have glucosamine in and are an 'ordinary' sort of price. Smell nice too:-)

Off the top of my head I think is's 20-25 quid, sorry can't remember exactly. Certainly not as much as you are paying for your Top Spec. It lasts me about 2 to 3 weeks.

Sorry, but to me that sounds similar, if not more expensive than feeding the top spec.

My mare has topspec senior, but aside from that only about half a scoop of Spillers Senior Maintenance mix (I do agree the spillers senior mixes are fab

) and that has her looking well

I have decided the cost of topsepc is more than worth it for what it makes her look like, but also for how greatly it reduces the need for concentrates.

All added together you are probably right.

I do tend to spoil him and he probably would do just as well on less during the Summer. We haave excellent grazing and he is out all day.

Puppy; that is what i am worried about the Top spec is fab but it is just the cost but would hate to change not he does not look so well.
How i wish i could win the lottery and not worry

I give mine a 1/2 ration of TS when they are doing very well (read, tubby *rolls eyes at ponies*)

Its a hell of alot cheaper for me to feed TS than mix.

To give us a greater idea of alternatives, what size is your horse/quantity of TS are you feeding, and what do you feed on top of the TS?

Since putting my girl on it, I don't think I'd ever go without, but I know the joy of having a pricey horse to feed. Thankfully my former poor dooer isn't too bad these days...

He is 16.1 hh warmblood quite a good doer in work 5-6 days a week i feed two cups per day with show shine chaff thats in the summer as in large field with lots of grass in winter gets top spec cool and condition cubes as well
He has done really well on this but when i say £40.95 for a bag think oh dear

naf pink powder - broad spectrum supplement & probiotic( think its good 4 older horses) & something like alfa oil xxx

Here is my 30yo

She is feed Triple Crown Even Keel with Badminton Easy Rider, I also give her Elastin for her joints.

Even Keel is about 10 a bag, last 6 wks, the Easy Rider is the chaff and is £6.90 (it has a foot supplement in it) lasts probably between 4 - 5 weeks and Elastin is about £19 for a month worth.

Top Spec Senior is not as expensive as it looks, yes its £40.95 bag but you don't feed it like a mix or cubes.

I calculated

Top Spec Senior £40.95 lasted around 3 months costing approx £13.65 per month

16+ Mix by D&H £10.75 lasted approx 16 days costing approx £18 - £20 per month

So it actually works out cheaper for me to buy TS Senior fed on its own. Probably work out equal if I added some extra feed.

Its just the initial outlay when first bought that makes it seem expensive.

The figures for me are rough etimates and depend on how much you feed.

I have recently changed my oldie over onto Spillers Senior Balancer, it normally retails at £32.99 but was £5 off and lasts six weeks. It has a really good spec, ie remedial amounts of biotin and glucosamine and also extra Vit C for breathing so actually works out much cheaper :)

I feed topspec to all my horses, I like the fact they get all the goodness in a tiny bit off feed and they don't need big meals, all keep their weight well and don't need to pile feed into them like other years. Even my tbs look great with little food. The thing you need to think about is, how much per day off a other feed what u need to feed a day to get daily vits/min intake? Than are you going to add joint supp? Starts mounting up cost that way. Topspec senior is a very very good balancer and with a very good joint supplement added and at £40 a bag which will do a 500kg horse 40 days which at £1 a day I think it's good value.
Feeding topspec has kept my feed costs down in the last year as I now do not buy hoof supplement, oil, joint supplement all on top off feed costs.
