I am pondering which stallions to shortlist for my new broodmare for next year. She's Polish Warmblood ex a Dual purpose racing TB. She'll be 11 years old next year, is bright bay, 16.1hh, is well conformed and very athletic. Critisms would have to be, a little weak through the loin, minutely straight through the shoulder and hind leg (but not by much) and I'd like a little more bone ideally - but I am ultra critical. Most people would not notice these but I am aware of her slight imperfections. She moves really nicely and covers the ground well but favours the flatter paces from the TB side of her breeding. She evented seccessfully up to Intermediate level but had an accident in the field (hind leg caught in rug when rolling, paniced and tried to jump an unjumpable hedge = now permanently unlevel behind. The horse has been bumming about at grass for the past 2 years until I bought her last week.

I've up to £1500 to spend in total and would like to produce something a little bigger than the mare, suitable for eventing and dressage. This may be my last foal so I would like to breed something really special.

Can anyone suggest top stallion/s which strongly stamp their offspring with super movement, good looks, size, bone and trainable temperament???? Know I don't ask for much, eh!! LOL

But figure the better the stallion I choose the best chance I have of producing something really nice for my son to ride in the future. I'd like to use a stallion which is already proven, with lots of offspring already proving themselves.

Any ideas anyone?

would it be to SJ or event?

Of the older stallions I could definitely say that Clinton I definately stamps his stock...you can always spot a Clinton head..only have to look at Clintissimo Z and other sons to see it as well as Clinton's full sister's stock to see all the family resemblances...his sister is the dam of Levisto Z who is then the sire of Level Z. You can DEFINATELY see the family resemblance with these guys especially.

Don't confuse the Clinton's tho...there are 3....Clinton I (correct one) and Clinton II are full bro's (II stands at Shockemohle's) and then there is Clinton, who is sire of Cornet Obolensky. That particular Clinton is known to have a 'questionable' temperament.

I know that Clinton I stands at Boeckmann's and semen is available through Equine AI and Elite Jumping Stallions (although he is not on their site - have to enquire about him) and his stud fee I believe is 1000euros. His website is: http://horse-flirt.de/boeckmann/cms/index.php?client=1&lang=2&idcat=7&idart=131 Boeckmann also stand Cordalme Z - whose progeny record speaks for itself IMO - his semen isn't that great anymore tho I believe. This is him http://horse-flirt.de/boeckmann/cms/index.php?client=1&lang=2&idcat=7&idart=46

I know I would definately be using him if and when I get the chance...Clintissimo being great testament to his stock!!!

Aaaah, but not knowing much about Cleveland Bay bloodlines I wouldn't know where to start. I used to ride a 10 year old, 16.3hh Cleveland Bay x TB mare many (MANY) moons ago. One thing that forever stands out was that she had poor legs -bowed tendons, spavins, capped hock, capped elbow, splints AND wingalls - poor horse ** runs and hides as she knows StinkerStonkersMum is a Cleveland Bay enthusiast **

Of course, that was just the one example of the breed but it did put me off rather. She'd presumably done too much too young... It was back in the early 1980's when many people were less aware of the damage they could do by rushing a big, immature horse to do too much too soon. But, since then, I've not come across another one in the flesh to compare.

If you know which are the best, proven, Cleveland Bay stallions, let me know. I've got until next spring to decide and am not prejudiced against breed (although reluctant to use a stallion with too much TB blood).

SJ or event?

Ah, well there's the rub. Not sure yet, as son doesn't yet know in which direction he wants to go in. Guess it's safe to say that I'd like something that can jump like a stag but moves well enough to produce a good dressage test as well. Eventer then I suppose? That said, think SJ might be easier for my son. TBH would be pleased to produce a good horse for either discipline. Also, as it's for my son, I'm not wanting to produce anything that's likely to be too tricky temperament wise. Know some bloodlines are known to lean this way. Not for us please!!! Again, this is where all your experience can benefit us.

Would definitely still agree then with Clinton I - all his stock (that I have seen or known of) have lovely temperaments, and they are certinainly of the correct stamp to be dual purpose. Definately not going to make pure dressage horses but the movement is good enough to event and RC dressage, etc and BOY do they jump....only have to see Clintissimo Z jump in order tobe convinced of this one!!

Wht about the Irish Draught ? Clover Hill , KOD & Ginger Dick lines hav all proved themselves over and over agin in the eventing & showjumping. They certainly increase bone and durability and have temperaments to die for.

Mill Law?
or i second the suggestion of Irish Draught, definitely.
not Cleveland Bay, sorry, they are a VERY acquired taste, and a lot of people, like me, having had to deal with a few, now wouldn't touch one with someone else's bargepole...!

stravinsky ?. ok i know he is a TB also but my stravinsky filly out of TB type mare has more bone than the foal by demonstrator and the foal by MJ fine art out of the same mare and he certainly stamps his stock and adds quality

Is this for the Studfee alone, or including all the bills?

So if you are looking for super movement you are either looking for a dressage stallion, or a showjumper with exceptional movement.

Price to spend depends on the stallion and what type of semen is available. Reluctant to use Frozen due to success rate. I would not discount spending £1500 on stud fee and insemination package on top of that. Would have to be a bl**dy good stallion though

I really like ID's. Their build is lovely IMO & they add substance to offspring plus their temperaments are wonderful.

When I was young I came across a yearling colt by Silver Jasper, the colt was cheeky but absolutely lovely & considering his age, very well behaved.

I am a fan of ID's for their solid build, temperaments & all round ability. If I were you I'd be looking in that direction.

yes bear in mind the total cost i allowed foolishly 2,500 for semen~no problems there but only around £1000 for AI"ing for three mares thinking everything would be straighfoward(one insemination) silly me!! im now on nearly £1000 on just one mare so if your total including everything is all your got i would beaqr in mind things dont always go to plan and i would use LFG like what Ken Rehill does good luck

There are some super Trakehner lines for eventing. I've seen some surprisingly sturdy first generation TB crosses - heavier than either parent. They don't tend to be the roundest movers though and some jump with their forearms low, which is a total pet peeve of mine.

As far as "stamping" get completely, well that IS what everyone's looking for!

Personally, I'm very keen on stallions that improve temperament so long as they have all the other goods.
