Topline - How and why is it important?

Topline is the visible line of muscles along the top of the horse from the top of the tail to the poll at the top of the neck.

It is created by correct muscular development and correct feeding during training

It is important because if the horse is being trained correctly, then it will develop. If the horse is not being trained at all, or being trained incorrectly, then topline will not develop.

In a nutshell!

There are plenty of feeds on the market which claim to produce "topline" - the only thing that will develop true topline is work.... it is possible to feed to give you an illusion of it - but it'll be fat!

You need to give enough feed for the horse to develop muscle and that depends on the type of horse and the sort of work being done - it's hard to recommend specific feed without knowing that!

We have working hunters, hunters and dressage horses - they don't get expensive "topline" feeds - they just work hard :) and get a varying combination of Countrywide horse & pony nuts and conditioning cubes

Topline is important so that the horse can most effectively carry the weight of it's rider. It's like a weak bridge (no topline) vs a strong bridge (good topline).

As for feeds... you're better off with correct schooling and a ballanced diet to maintain weight and energy if needed.
