How long should I wait to put the ponies back on it afterwards and what about the grass thats been topped. Do I need to clear it away?

Two schools of thought on that. 3/4 of the yard where I am based leave it. The other 1/4 like me with colic prone horses used to get it up. Luckily Lari seems to be made of stronger stuff than Bailey who would always get colic at the drop of a hat, so I will probably leave it down.

A lot of it will be where they poo and wee anyway so it won't be palatable to them as it will be tainted. Its very much up to the individual, no hard or fast rules. And of course the bigger the paddock or field the harder/longer it is to get up. My partner last time used the yard tractor with the bucket and scraped the bucket on the surface and this gathered it up into better piles which was very effective and less time consuming.

I can remember helping my friend clear her 3rd of an acre paddock for her mare when it had been topped, we must have collected about 10 or 12 wheelbarrows between us. It was back breaking work.

I top the fields with them in if needed. Mostly they move out, it gets topped and put back a week or so later, but then I have the fields to rotate.

It is not like lawn clippings and scattered all over the field so wilt and dry not sweat and brew.
