How much do you pay per acre/per job for topping?

I have just been quoted £50 for what is maybe a 1/3 of an acre max, no travel involved as they were topping next door and thought id ask, I thought this was slightly outlandish cost for the area, thoughts?

I pay £20-25 per hour and would expect to pay for an hours work minimum but would not expect it to take anywhere near an hour to do 1/3rd acre even if were very overgrown.

I recently paid £40 per hour plus a flat rate of £20 for travelling (quad and topper bought on a trailer) total cost for 2 acres of very overgrown grass was £120 which i was happy to pay as the job was excellent and chap was on time and efficient

This sounds similar to what i was thinking, would have happily paid a little more for the convenience.

I doubt he wanted to do it so he hiked up the price. If people say yes its a bonus.

They had the chance twice to say no as spoke to others also and then came across to see the area, I would have happily taken a straight out no had he not wanted to do it.

Just out of interest what did the others quote? You may have said yes! so maybe that why he didnt say no. I can tell you from experience the tiny insignificant jobs often have hidden cost

It will cost the contractor £50 to get the topper out of the shed, attach it to his tractor, check that everything is working fine, all oil levels are up to scratch, find the shear bolts in the tool shed, and to get to your field.

I'd be charging £100, but then I wouldn't want the job either. If I hit one of your non-existent stones or the chain harrows you've forgotten about, I'd be losing money!

I usually pay about £60 no matter how much of my field he does, because it takes time to set up and get there and do, however he has not been yet. My paddocks are hiding a least a dozen elephants ...........

Anyone seen a guy with a small red tractor ? ;)
