Ive torn a muscle in my back - only hurts when lifting and/or twisting (ie mucking out!!) but no way can i give it rest......what can i do to help it along? heat or cold or both or just painkiller gel and muckout really badly in my wrong hand?!

Ibuleve. Anadin Extra. The combination has worked for me (broken back) :)

As to mucking out, I've just got one of those shovel/scoop things with a long handle and a little rake thing (terribly description!). Found one!

Either that, or sit on a plastic bag, wear gloves, and do it by hand.

When sweeping. Lots of little strokes of the brush with it held in front of you. Takes a bit longer, but is effective. Just be careful if the ground has holes/dips in it - you do not want to sweep and have the brush catch on something, that will hurt!

I certainly understand where you are coming from, but if you do NOT rest it, you will be paying for it later.......!

I'm currently undergoing expensive sessions with a sports therapist to sort out the muscles in my back that I carried on with when I was advised to rest years ago and didn't....

It is slowly improving, but I should have listened, then I wouldn't have been in agony these last few months!

I have just been diagnosed with adamaged (sprained/strained whatever) sacral ligament. God knows what I have done but there is not much I can do to 'fix' it other than give it time. Try not lifting anything, and if you do, make sure you lift 'properly' - ie bend your knees and keep your back straight.

At home, make sure you sit up properly in your chair/sofa and use cushions to help support your back and keep it in the correct position. Do some stretches - lie on your front and slowly push up on your hands to arch your back up. Do not over do it though, just gently to carefully stretch the muscles.

Mucking out's a tough one - all I can suggest is just do it slower than normal, take breaks to stand up straight and stretch the muscles out. Do not lift too heavy forkfuls.

I have done similar strains before, they do often seem to suddenly disappear as quickly as they have appeared but resting as much as possible is one of the best treatments.
