My 5 year old 17.3hh has just been diagnosed with a torn Medial Collateral Ligament in his Stifle, and the vet has put him on 3 months box rest.
I have asked about any treatments or supplements to help him....and apart from putting him on a joint supplement, I have been told there is nothing I can do but rest him and wait. They have told me it is unlikely I will ever ride him again, and we are aiming at getting him sound enough to be a field companion.
Has anyone else gone through this experience, or can offer any advice or suggestions....? It's all a bit daunting.

My mare did it, she went to Rossdales for them to 'have a look' but she was very broken. I bred a foal from her but she was never ridden properly again. She also was never sound, she had a short stride on the damaged leg. My other half used to sit on her as he's lighter than me and walk down the lane and back but thats all. She had hyonate jabs and steroids but nothing really helped. I had her on Blue Chip Pro aswell. She always looked fantastic just lame :( You may find after a few yrs that yours gets problems from compensating, I had my girl pts as her fetlock on the other leg started to collapse. Sorry my account isn't enspiring, yours may be a lot less damaged, Lillys was a 3 / 10, 10 being ok. Hope yours is ok

mine has just damaged his cruciate ligament in his stifle - not quite the same, but equally rubbish in terms of what they can do for it. he's had 3mths box rest and is now on 6mths paddock rest then next yr i get to reassess whether he's still lame or not and if there's any hope of bringing him back into work. he's only just turned 8 :( He's on Newmarket Joint Supplement and i used magnetic boots on him during his box rest but that's it in terms of treatment.

Thank you both.....it helps just a little to know I'm not alone. And it's best to know the good and the bad, to be more informed about the situation and the possibilities of what implications there may be, so thank you.
My boy is only on day 7 box rest - got another 83 days to go!! Stress!
I hope Llewi gets better for you! x
