Torn ligament

My boy went lame about 4 weeks ago and we thought it was brusied sole but it didnt get better and vet decided that we should investigate. Nerve blocked foot and fetlock and nothing. So he came back yesterday and joint blocked knee and we then x rayed. It was so clear on one of the xrays that he has torn the ligament away from the bone but need to scan him to see exactly which. This is above the knee so not common (according to our vet) the vet was in agony from broken ribs from a fall on Saturday that he sustained while out hunting. So we have to wait until next week to scan - has anyone any experience with this sort of problem. He is now on box rest for 12 weeks with just 10 minutes out each day to stretch his legs. Good that he is a nice boy and doesn't mess on the lead rope. He is only 6 by the way and a show jumper but we havent a clue how it happened. Just got our other boy sound from spavin almost a year ago in both hocks but he has started jumping again and is in great form so I will keep my fingers crossed for the other one. My horse did his curb two years ago came completely sound he is now on rest for surgery from spavin.(hes chestnut too)12 weeks is about normal for healing then restricted turnout, he will probably have scans before you bring him back after 12 weeks.I didnt jump mine for ages as soon as I started he did a tendon arent they a nightmare.

What a shame for your boy...
My mare tore the ligament away from the bone behind her knee last year...she had box rest, then a tiny paddock outside her stable (she would have gone nuts if we hadnt allowed her this), then walking in hand, she also had shockwave treatment, injections...all in all it was about 3/4 months...
It appeared all she did was have a canter in the field - not even madly - just a normal canter and then stopped and was lame...straight away my vet thought it was ligament so scanned etc within a few days.
Unfortunately, just as we had got that right, she had to go to hospital for an accident to her knee..touch and go if fixable but luckily she was fine (apparently if they are going to injure anywhere the knee joint is probably the best bet!!!).
She also has arthritis in her hocks...but that is a different story!!!
My girl was 18/19yrs old when she did this...so I would think a 6yr old would have quite a good chance at healing well...

I think it completely depends on what ligament, how bad and the horse. Mine did her upper suspensory ligaments and had shockwave etc but never came fully sounds, others I know are absolutely fine. Seems to me that anything can cause it but mine did it our hacking, others have done it in the field. Fingers crossed for a full and speedy recovery.
