Nappy horse has finally won, I have totally lost my confidence in him. Used to not be scared at all riding him but since the nappiness set in and a recent fall. Ive had it.
Since he got me off by spinning round he has tried to do it twice more. He had never done it before but is obviously a fast learner. Anyway have decided to give up riding, probably time anyway now getting too old to bounce. Just bought a new pair of boots too and a nice new bridle!

Could you get someone to re school him?? and give you some help...

riding is meant to be fun. if you are not enjoying it then fair enough. do you really want to give up riding completely though? maybe after a break you'd feel better with a different horse?

Always meant this to be my last horse,Im 61 now and only up to an easy hacker, which he has turned out not to be. Cant go through it all again looking for another one. Ive had
5 horses since I started riding and 2 have been stars, and 3 not (these 3 have been cobs !)

Oh thats a shame, I do know how you feel. Im 48 but only really a happy hacker too. I had an 8 year break from riding and before I found Che, I bought a mare who was everything she was not supposed to be! She completely shattered my confidence and any faith I had in my own ability to ride. I was lucky in that the dealer agreed to take her back and I got an almost complete refund. Che was advertised so locally to me and sounded perfect so I went for a test ride and the rest is history but I know how soul destroying the wrong horse can be and how depressing it can be searching for the right one. I hope you manage to work things out.

It's demoralising isn't it?

If you really have had enough of this horse the best bet would be to loan/sell him on, and look for another, or perhaps loan/share another horse more suited.

It would be a great shame to solidly give up. :)

Sell him on as a project and take your time finding a happy hacker. I'm 61 and I couldn't live with out a horse in my life (I've 4) and I've 2 to back and taking my time about it:):)I'd see no reason to get up in the mornings if I didn't have them:(:(:(

Poor you!

I do understand.

I waver between giving up and being brave but never very confidant.

I would sell this horse and have some lessons or go out on escorted hacks on a nice riding school plod who you can learn to trust again. It takes time but, more importantly, it takes time in the saddle to regain your confidence. A ******* horse can ruin years of carefully acquired experience and courage in just seconds and then you are back to Square 1.

If it were me, I would take a small backward step, reassess, find your comfort zone and then aim to have fun in that. If it involves someone else's horse, ie a riding school or loan, then enjoy that.

You are certainly not alone with this. But for the grace of God, go most of us. There comes a time when returning from a ride in one piece does not constitute a good ride!

I totally second this, I too returned to riding after a 9 year break and first horse wrecked my by now vry fragile confidence but after he had to go I have been hacking out weekly with a very dear friend who runs a riding school and gradually my confidence is returning and i hope I am about to buy again. |It didn't take long on a dependable horse to feel up to trying again and I am no spring chicken either. I fully empathise Alicmary and wish you happiness in whatever yu decide to do xx

Completely agee with Francis 144.

I do understand where you are coming from. My homebred was a doddle to hack out as a four year old but over the years he has found it more and more stressful and whilst he doesn't nap or spook he can occasionally expolde into a broncing nightmare out hacking. I have decided that it is too risky to hack him out in case I come off and he ends up on the road. Fortunately he is very happy to work in the school and I have discovered a love of dressage!

Oh no!! :(

Is giving up really what you want to do?
Maybe step out of owning a horse, and find out if someone wants their own happy hacker maybe riding out twice or three times a week? Like a share type thing or if someone has 2 horses that you could hack out with them?

I know how awful it is, I lost my confidence jumping - I didn't have solid confidence to start off with and was also teaching my mare at the same time - I've now started jumping my YO's ID mare who will jump anything, everything and whatever you point her at and its bringing me on in leaps and bounds and I'm starting to enjoy it again :)

Try not to give up on a bad point if you can help it, that would be such a shame!

forgot about this thread, it slipped away! I keep remembering the nice little hacks we had before he turned nappy, we were really begining to get ourselves together, makes me sad really. Unfortuately had a cob previously that after she had dumped me once kept trying the same thing despite me being ready for it, and as they say its deja vue all over again !Feel its partly my fault for not being an active rider as such, always tended to slop along a bit and hes got my number now. However he is a bit of a sensitive sort and although I have now advertised him for sale cant face actually doing it ! He needs a permanent long term home and not to be moved on again and again which I fear might happen. It feels like rehoming one of my dogs and I could never do that. Im such a blooming wimp

OK you've lost your confidence and just don't want to ride him so I can understand that so sell him. Do not buy another one riding is meant to be fun so go to a riding school or a trekking centre that can help you remember why you wanted your own. That way your new boots won't go to waste and you will see not all horses are like this. Don't give up on yourself. These days people turn horses out that are basically ****. Too highly strung and whatever. So many think they know what they are doing breeding them and getting someone to back them and sell them on. Go back to basics and enjoy:)

This horse isn't called Samson by any chance?

Sorry you are having a bad time of it. The important thing is to stay safe and enjoy it, and if thats not happening, move on. Sadly it happens.
Hugs x

I was seriously considering selling my boy as he was being really bad, he had been under weight when i bought him and has put on a lot of condition this spring so thought that now he was at a good weight he was going to be to much for me, turns out his saddle was hurting him, have now got a new saddle and my lovely old horse back. What i'm trying to say is have you checked out all the obv things that could be making him nap or do you have a friend you could hack out with to try and get him over this new habit?
If it's really what you want to do then go with outhers advice about riding school etc as riding is supposed to be fun after all but i just think i came so close to selling my lovely boy and it wasn't his fault
