Just a pointless post really, but tonight I wnet down to livery yard to spoil and groom my wonderful horse Bob. I do not ride him as he is too much horse for me, but the amount of joy I get from my time with him is priceless. I am 54 years old, and have not ridden for 30 years, but when I am with him I am that young girl of 24 having banter with other owners! My husband says I am a different person since Bob came and I could not agree with him more. I am totally smitten, and the love he gives me back is amazing. As I said a pointless post, but just wondered if there are any other non riding horse owners who get as much from them as I do. Merry Christmas to you all.

I understand where you are coming from. I got my first horse last year at the age of 50, I also hadn't ridden for about 30 years. It has been a steep learning curve but I am lucky to have plenty of advice available.
I do try to ride mine but I don't have much free time and he is difficult to hack out alone(something we need to work on I know).
It would not worry me if I didn't ride him, I just enjoy looking after him.
Since he arrived I have been a much more settled and happier person, strange how they can change your life so much.;)

I ride sometimes and i dont sometimes and i share your thoughts entirely, and a happy christmas to you to, let us remember those less fortunate.

What a lovely post. I am soon to be 48 and my boy is 3 1/2, I bought him when he was 3 months old. I have now started hacking out on him quietly but the best time is spent fussing and grooming him. Have a lovely christmas!

My big horse spends more time off work with illness conditions than she actually does in work - she is currently at the start of a 3 month rest period (again!) and it doesn't bother me not riding at all. My youngster is just starting to do little bits of ridden work, but again, it's not something I actually crave doing. It would never bother me if I never rode again, as long as I have horses in my life.

This topic just reminded me of this poem. You probably have seen it many times before, but.........

When I am an old Horsewoman:

I shall wear turquoise and diamonds,
And a straw hat that doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my social security on white wine
and carrots,
And sit in my alley-way of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.

I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night
And ride the old bay gelding,
Across the moonstruck meadow
If my old bones will allow.

And when people come to call, I will smile and nod
As I walk past the gardens to the barn
and show instead the flowers growing
inside stalls fresh-lined with straw.
I will shovel and sweat and wear hay in my hair
as if it were a jewel.

And I will be an embarrassment to all,
Who will not yet have found the peace in being free
to have a horse as a best friend,
A friend who waits at midnight hour
With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be
When I am old.

Love this

What a lovely thread :) I do ride , but feel the exact same way as you do about your boy - if I could never ride mine again for whatever reason I would still love him just as much as I do today. It's unconditional.

I completely agree!

I have had a lovely afternoon with my pony. We had a long chat (bit one sided if im honest) some kisses and cuddles, grooming etc. Just love my little ginger pony :) x

Same age as you but I'm a riding non owner :) I have lessons on a RS horse that I totally love. I finish my hour lesson happy calm and uplifted. We seem to have some weird connection and if I'm tense so is he so he's taught me calmness and relaxation. I was complemented recently on how calm I am around horses and I know that it is all down to this very special horse. I also share two others. Riding, i only took it up 18 months ago, and horses has made a huge difference to my life and how I feel. They are wonderful animals.
Really lovely to read your post :)

Lovely post. I have not ridden regularly in the last 14 months as I lost my beloved late mare, I bought a youngster a few months after losing her who I am slowly backing now, but I have loved having her, even without the riding, just being on the yard and around horses does my soul and sanity so much good, horses are therapy to me
