Hello all.

Basically my chap currently looks a bit of a state. He's had a virus and secondary to the virus is a skin problem which is basically like rainscald (apparently due to the fact his immune system is down). So he has huge bald patches all over him and I mean bald - skin, no hair whatsoever. I'm due to bath him tomorrow with Hexocil which the vet has given me. He said to me "Be warned a lot of hair is going to come off and he'll look a lot worse". So I'm expecting him to be bald basically - his neck is pretty much like that already.

Obviously I'm going to have to sort out a rug of some kind for him. But is there anything I could use on his skin to promote regrowth of hair (at least this has happened just before his summer coat should start coming through!) When my mare has had rainscald in the past I've always used Gold Label Wonder Gel but I can't really use this all over his body...unless I could dilute it into water or something?!

I'm going to use some E45 on his sore scaly bits as I thought that would be nice and mild.

Any thoughts?

William lost most of his coat when he was ill with whatever poisoned him, we just brushed him gently with a really soft brush to encourage hair growth and put him on some oil too.H ewas already on a multivitamin supplement.
He soon grew a new coat and it looked very healthy.
One of the best things for skin is bamboo butter from the Body Shop.
Really good for skin problems human and equine.

My friends horse did this - it looks pretty manky at the time but his hair will come back quicker than you think!

Might be worth trying some Pink Powder as a feed supplement - it's great as a pick me up (unless he already has a balancer).

If there's bald bits where his rugs sit smother some vaseline on them to stop them rubbing.

Marigold is a herb used for all sorts of skin problems in humans and animals. Combined with cleavers its even better as cleavers supplies silica for hair growth. Linseed is good for the skin because it is high in oil, this will help keep the skin supple and not too dry.
As henryhorn says, a really good regular groom would help. It will get rid of the dead skin and promote blood flow to encourage hair growth.

Pink Powder is a good idea, or contact the Global Herbs people. Their products are good, if a bit pricey, but you usually only have to buy a "course" not feed it for ever more.

I gave mine a course of Global Herbs (Restore???? not sure) when he had terrible ringworm which left him with big sore patches all over, but the hair grew back OK and it was impossible to tell he had any trouble.

Mine had a similar problem last year on her shoulder. A course of antibiotics/Malaseb/Hibi scrub were all tried without any real results, infact the Malaseb appeared to make it worse. I finaly cleared it up by applying Aloe Vera gel to it twice daily and it healed really quickly. I do think that their immune system has to sort it out itself as well, so not sure if it was her own work or the gel, but at least it kept the skin healthy.

My cob had this after surviving grass sickness back in 1996
I used Blue Chip with great sucess along with a Robinsons shampoo which is sadly no longer marketed.
