Totally depressed and sad now ?

I have recently made tentative enquiries about another heeler pup, and am now spending all my time reminding myself of all the hard work that comes with a young pup and wondering if I can face it again, and I "only" have 3 dogs. George seems very happy with his life now, do you think he would appreciate sharing your lap :)

I suppose the problem is that I don’t know how George will be with another terrier! He is lovely with my mums cavaliers and has always been a real sweetie with them, never a moment of bother.

He is intimidated by the greyhounds size, so although he won’t let them push him around he tends to ‘live separately’ to them and is a ‘person (me!) dog’ not a ‘dog dog’

I hadn’t considered a puppy to be honest because I’ve had rescues for so long...my inclination is that he would take to a puppy more easily than another adult, but that’s based on my knowledge of other breeds not JRTs!

and as TP rightly says, it may not be worth rocking the boat at all....he may prefer being the only small dog! But then he is lovely with the cavaliers....

As you can tell, I’m in a complete quandary! I did also think of GW’s idea of taking him to meet the pups - but then if he is vile to them, I can imagine how impressed the breeder would be if I turned round at that point and said ‘oh I can’t have one’. Pups are 4 1/2 hours away so it’s not like I can pop up, particularly with lockdown (they are just over the border in Scotland, so I need to find our travel regs there too!)

Now this is where I would say that as a dog owner you wanted the best for your dog and the pup to be bothered to do this you would be exactly the person I wanted to have one of mine. So if George was sparky or snappy with pup it would not reflect on you at all,especially if you explained your dilema. Most good breeders want their pups best interests. Rather than find out your pup has been rehomed within days of it being sold.

Ah just seen his name is Dennis, so obviously some spaniel in there, what a weird mix, poor dog won't know whether to kill things or retrieve them :)

my friend has a springer/border cross, it kills things and THEN retrieves them!

Surely most breeders wouldn't let your dog interact with their puppies anyway, as they're not vaccinated it would put the whole litter at risk.
Glad to see you've decided not to have a puppy, I don't think that would be fair on George. I actually don't think it's a particularly good idea getting another terrier anyway to be honest. Terriers are much more into being the only dog, although you've got the long dogs, they probably wouldn't be perceived as a threat to him but another terrier might upset his place in the household.

I feel exactly like you describe. And so miserable about everything I haven't even commented on any of the recent dog threads because I just can't bring myself to believe what is happening. My husband agreed at the start of lockdown that we'd get a "lockdown rescue" in 8-10 months time when all the lockdown puppies turn into teenage monsters. I never imagined they would be looking for homes so soon. My husband now doesn't feel "emotionally ready" and it's all breaking my heart ...

All I want is a totally bombproof dog as in friendly with all dogs and people that can stay home alone a few hours here and there! They'll all be ruined by then!

where are you? I know of a smooth haired patterdale bitch (18 months) looking for a good home. She isn’t housetrained now (although was as a pup) and great nature with dogs and people but is driven to kill little flurries as you’d expect. She’s in the Scottish Borders.

I agree. George reminds me of my male BT. Absolute dirtbag with other dogs outside of the household but has been no concern re introducing new puppies/young female dogs into the fold.Personally, I would only get a bitch though - little men tend to like to protect their littleness because they know they’re little.?

OMG gorgeous - whereabouts are they? Not actually for me lol, for a friend who was desperate for a Black and Tan terrier!

JennBags - that does surprise me about terriers being better as only dogs as loads of people I know have had more than one terrier? It would never occur to me to only have one to be honest ?

Not all of them, but certainly the older they get, the more used to being the only terrier they get. I've got friends who've had issues introducing younger terriers to older ones. Just sharing my experiences.

I took George to the petrol station tonight, with my bike in the back of the car so I could inflate the tyres. When we got there he jumped out of the car before I could stop him and ran happily around the open field that is next to the petrol station.... then ran round the forecourt saying hello to everyone.... ???

I don’t want another terrier after all ????

They are in West Wales..St.Clears.

Of course, you know what to do!! Reserve one NOW!! We've introduced several with older dogs without issue. Obviously you make sure the pup doesn't annoy the older dogs.

Oh EM I needed you earlier today before I dithered and wobbled all day lol! I almost PM’d you but I thought you deserved some peace and quiet ? I thought I’d decided no.... I just don’t know ???

As you know I'm a sucker for JRTs so certainly not unbiased - only problem we've ever had is son's dog squaring up to Hector, it was fine when they lived together but when son moved out and his dog would only visit now and again and try to rule the roost when he visited occasionally, had he been here all the time I don't think there would have been any problem.
