(this is in the veterinary bit too but didnt know how many of you ventured in there and thought you many knowledgeable people might be able to help...)

Well as many of you know Fiddler has been back in work (after slightly damaging his suspensory ligament) for 3 1/2months - he is going really nicely and we are currently re schooling him on the flat and generally keeping everything calm and relaxed.

He has been with my SJ trainer for the last 2 weeks and came home a week ago looking a little under weight but going really beautifully (although that is beside the point ) Gave him the whole of last week off to chill out and be a horse again, then rode him yesterday where he was really relaxed and going very nicely.

Today my new pessoa close contact saddle arrived for him so we put it on him and i rode him gently in walk and trot for 15mins or so, then stood with him while talking to my Mum and Dad for 5 mins. Then decided id better do a little more with him, so off i trotted him down the long side of the school, flexed him slightly to the outside as we reached the corner, flexed him to the inside slightly at the corner and......

WHAM

He was hopping hopping lame brought him straight back to walk, then put him gently back into trot to see if he had just tweaked something but no he was definitely hopping lame. So jumped off him and we led him in. Took all his tack off and felt up and down all his legs - nothing to be felt or found - no heat no nothing

checked the sole of every foot for a puncture - nothing.

Used the back of a hoof pick and put pressure on the soles to see if he had an abcess or bruise - nothing - no reaction

What on earth could it be?? Any one have ANY idea - im open to suggestions HE was still just as lame when we trotted him up the yard in hand 10mins later... i dont know what to do - when he nods his head up in trot the leg he damaged the suspensory on hits the floor - could this lameness be anything to do with this injury arising?? could it be the new saddle
confused.gif

any enlightenment?? many thanks xxx

I would always start with the foot as an explanation. could his shoe have moved and tweaked him. was he any better after 10 minutes. see what he is like tomorrow as any swelling or heat could have arisen by then. If he was mine I would probably get my farrier out.

Would doubt it is his new saddle - (love pessoas by the way!).

so unfair after your fab weekend.

He was absolutely no better - we trotted him up 10minutes after and then 5minutes after that and he was just as lame - he bobbing and everything

we have a sneaky feeling it may be an absess but thats only because it seems to be the only viable explanation at the moment
crazy.gif
could an absess rear its ugly head that unexpectedly?? would be surprised if the shoe has moved - they werent done that long ago and he was in a soft sand school

We will def check him again tomorrow, and then it will first be a farrier job and then if all else fails and he's no better - the vet - gawd!! i dont believe what my four legged friends through at me!!

mummy says it is very likely. Classic absess. Don't you just love 'em and hate 'em all at the same time.

okey dokey well it may be a farrier job then
wink.gif
while your here - on a different note - are there 4 water crossings in the intro at Mattingley??
blush.gif

no - 1 crossing over a stream and a dew pond. If you are looking at the map on line then alot of the fences over the stream are ditches. Probably know the whole course too well. Its the only course Ollie would go round properly!

Just two waters like Vic said.

The main dew pond first, followed by the one under trees, both very straightforward.
After the 2nd water on the home straight you loop back over an open water ditch which is situated under trees and pretty dark, just looks like an open ditch.

Coiuld be a thorn, I had apony go suddenly slightly lame, had vet out next day for unrelated other horse, and he had a quick look and dug out a giant thorn. You might not see a thorn, but worth taking a look?

ok- thats fine - either Hattie will do water after Mattingley then or she really WONT!!

smile.gif
she's got to grow up at the end of the day!! we cant just pick and choose our events that much otherwise she will end up going to one or two a year!

She can get her feet wet at the dew pond which is probably kinder so she can be braver at the stream! She doesn't want to dirty her nail vanish!

ooo no of course not - she wouldnt want to get her white tootsies wet now - honestly!!!!
smirk.gif
She seems to have got over her planting stage so HOPEFULLY she will either take a look and go for a splash OR just take the plunge good a proper with a massive leap!

blush.gif
not sure which i would prefer!

don't let her have nail vanish then! or chalk to whiten her little sockies! Keep telling her she could win a pretty rug!

i know - ill tell her she could win a pretty rug AND ill paint her toe nails and whiten her sockies IF she is good

grin.gif
do you think thats good enough to win a chesnut mare's heart??

Is there a pulse at the top and back of the pastern? a throbbing pulse would indicate something in the foot.
Anyway it deffo sounds like a foot bruise/abscess or something. Bad thrush can also cause hopping lameness too because the frog becomes soft and can therefore be more prone to bruising...

Hattikins - did you find out what the problem was? Was reading your thread. Interested to find out. I didn't want to put my tuppence worth in - but a suspensory ligment takes a long long time to totally heal. I mean, I've known horses on box rest for 4 months and then turned away for another 3. Mainly hunting accidents, quick turning, deep going etc. Have you left it long enough?
