nothing horsey, but after having my beloved landrover freelander for neary nine months! i had the dreadfull knock on the door yesterday from the police telling me its a stolen vehicle

. after watching it be towed away and made to feel like a crimal, an hour later i get another call from another police department saying i can go and collect it but i cant keep it!!! im very confused by the whole thing but as its christmas the investigation is on hold!!! just waiting for the next knock on the door!!

If the insurance paid out on it, there may be a chance of approaching them down the line & offering something for it to keep it.

Worth not getting too upset about it.

insurence not paid out, with the information i have given police suspect fraud i have to wait, but car was stolen from a garage with full service, log book and keys!!! plus 4 other cars all with keys. i smell a rat but i still may loose my car

How did you pay for the car?

Have you spoken to your insurance companny? While your insurance will not cover you for this type of thing if you have legal cover they may be able to assist you in persuing the seller of the vehicle as it does sound mighty fishy!

Hang on,...... when you registered the car with the DVLA..... why didn't is show up as stolen at the point? would you mind posting the legal response as I am interested in hearing where you stand? I am not suggesting that the original owner doesn't have rights - or in this case, the insurance company. i have a horrible feeling that, if you bought from a private individual you will have little or no rights - that is, if you can find him/her/it.

You have my full sympathy, I had this scenario years ago, (1997) leaves a very bad taste in the mouth and an even bigger whole in your bank account (£3300.00), the Police in my case were absolute tossers and very rude to my wife for actually phoning to find out what was happening when things just didn't seem to be progressing, meanwhile the bloody thing sat on my drive waiting and waiting weeks for plod to do anything, meanwhile you cant use it, "strangely" enough, after badgering the police to get on with things the van got stolen off my drive in broad daylight on a saturday morning within 2 hours of a plod comeing to look at it !!!!!!, whoever took it either had a key or knew "exactly" how to steal a vehicle in seconds.
I was told not to approach who I bought it from as they were under investigation, we still havent heard anything since 1997!!!!!

I bet they want you to have it back so as not to have to store it, so you will be lumbered with it until a decision is made and not allowed to use it.
Dont hold your breath for a favourible outcome.

One thing you will learn from this is to check very very carefully any vehicle you buy in the future.

Oh yea, DVLA did tell me that there was a ? over the reg when I tied to register it, things went downhill from that point.

i am allowed to use it though, i part payed by card and police although useless in north wales, very helpfull in manchester, only payed £2000,but will leave a big dent. but i have more information to give them now too. have registered the car now 9 months ago and taxed twice, never flagged up as stolen, evan had speeding fine"" still nothing, drive through deeside, machester pick up the plates and hay presto stolen!!! police seem to think the people who reported it may be involved, will here soon

Let us know how things work out, hope you get to keep it.

We also ended up with a Volvo totally legit, but some $hites decided to use our reg on "another" illegal Volvo, which although we were legit we were getting "their" speeding fines, that got sorted eventually.
Also garage we legit bought it from went bust owing finance companies, sooooo ours and about another 70 peoples cars got put on the stolen register, apparently we could have been arrested until it was sorted out

took CID about 2 years to get them to court, then they only got a slap on the wrist as they were "apparently" broke and no assets
