Totilas to stand at stud

License to print money really. Be very interesting to see what type of foals he produces. He is such an amazing horse, one wonders how much if it is *him* - freak of nature - and how much genetics. His dams line is super of course.

Yes - very interesting. Am with halfstep re what he will produce. Is he the final product we all want or can he himself contribute? After all wasn't there a blue hors stallion recently pulled for producing not the quality they expected - though he himself was outstanding? Doolittle wasn't it?

With his bloodlines Torilas should produce so it will be interesting to find out in the 2011 foal shows

If you look at the way that Lingh went, then you will see that a lot of this freakish movement is down to training, as the high front end action is similar to that of Lingh when Edward rode him.

I doubt very much that you would get a foal born with that kind of movement.

Yes, agree 100% that the excessive movement (which I personally hate) is down to training. However, I think it is his trainability in combination with his athleticism (which allows him to be trained in this way) that will be of interest. It would be for me. I can find many proven stallions that will pass on great movement and some that will pass on a great trainability. But great trainability and movement together passed on consistently - not so easy to find. He wouldn't be my own choice really - particulary not until proven, and particularly since I have heard that he is very hot and is a difficult horse - fine for a pro - its what many of them want - but not fine for a middle aged amateur like myself

I don't know how true that is though. If the mare was an exact match for him and I had lots of ££££ then why not - no doubt foal woud be saleable if I didn't like it

Mmm I understand where you are coming from but until the foalies start appearing who knows however I'd just like to point out that I bred from two phenomenally tempered horses and ended up with a razor sharp nit!

Me neither Levantosh. Cronicle of the horse breeding board is usually v quick with anything but nothing there.

Just got to wait and see! lol - if it is true hopefully there will be little Totilas lookalikes for me to buy in 5 years when I finish vet school and hopefully get my own horse again!

If the razor sharp nit is any of the horses in your banner then at least he is very beautiful squirty's mum! Breeding has so much chance involved - but that's what makes it interesting

I have got to the old careful stage where I just want nice proven broodmares and stallions to minimise the risk of anything likely to break my old bones

QR: Interesting, there was a very in depth interview with his owners in Hoefslag's year-end special edition, and they were adamant he would not be used for breeding at all until he had proven himself "for a long time" at the highest level. They don't need the money, although I have to say it must be tempting for them to at least collect and store some frozen just in case he has an accident...

They always do this sort of thing when a stallion makes it big, though. Hickstead was offered for $5k after the last Olympics despite not being approved by the KWPN. Abdullah commanded the same sort of price after Los Angelas, although that was before the international trade in semen really took off. (They were one of the first stallion owners to have a lab built on site.)

As to how many take advantage at that price . . . I think most breeders would rather wait and see, in part because there's no guarantee the horse will still be a marketable "name" when the foals are older so you might get stuck with an expensive dud.

Hmmm, it shall be interesting to see what his youngstock are like, and what crazy prices they make, but I can't say I'd use him on my mare
