Interested to hear from anyone whose had one! I'm currently towing with a Tiguan, occasionally taking both my small horses which takes me pretty close (1800kg inc trailer) to my towing limit.

I slightly regret the tiguan as purposely didn't go for a chunkier 4x4 for fuel efficiency, but this tiguan (09) is older than the one I've had before (15) and the fuel efficiency is rubbish anyway!!

Am considering swapping for either an older, high mileage touareg, spending around 6/7k or possibly biting the bullet and getting something much newer and spending around 20k.. which I slightly loathe to do for a vehicle which, in reality, will get badly treated with dog hair, scratches etc :D

Is there anything I need to be wary/mindful of with the older ones? I obviously don't want something likely to break down but I am assuming I can rely on a VW...

I've got a 2012 Touareg. I love it, I didn't test drive before buying (private sale) but had done a lot of research. I didn't want something too big, but wanted a decent towing capacity. The Touareg was the compromise between the bigger pickup types and still being fuel efficient enough to drive around town.

I had some issues with losing coolant, but once that was resolved it hasn't missed a beat. Would definitely recommend. It tows super well, almost as if you don't have anything attached! People here complain that VWs cost more to service (being an EU car, you wouldn't have that issue), but to be honest its on par with my old Subaru so hasn't bothered me at all.

ETA: I get about 600km to a tank driving around town at the moment. As a 3L, it's been more fuel efficient than my old car so I haven't really noticed a difference. It would easily take me to Melbourne (800km) on one tank and then some left over.

We’re on our second Touareg but they are 3-4 years when we bought them. You don’t notice you’re towing.

I have just bought a kia sorento to tow with. Tows 3tonne. Taking it out with horse for first time tomorrow to see what it's like. Usually tow with a ford ranger which makes the unit quiet long so will see how I get on with the kia!

No experience but after lots of research Touareg is my top choice when I eventually get around to buying. I’ve a 15 yr old Golf done 135,000 miles still going strong. They do hold their value though unlike my Golf so even old ones with high mileage are pricey.

I have a 2006 Touareg and it’s excellent. Even at 14 years old it’s a lovely comfortable car, with everything but Bluetooth. It is very thirsty and the tax is high, but if you can afford a newer one then it won’t be so bad.

In terms of towing, you literally don’t know you have a trailer on the back and the trailer doesn’t affect the fuel economy too much

I love mine and am looking to replace it with a newer one next year

I paid £4,000 for my old one with high mileage, I wouldn’t have called that too pricey

I got one earlier this year and love it. You don’t know your towing. It’s a 2015 and the tax is high and its thirsty. I still adore it. I had a 2008 Kia Sorento before and never again, I had nothing but problems with it and it did t pull well. I was quite possibly unlucky with the sore to as some people love them but it just caused me headaches and the clutch burned on steep hills. I’ve had two bit horses on the back of the Touareg and wouldn’t have known. The cruise control is also lovely on the motorway.

Thanks everyone. I think I’ll switch the car in Jan. Maybe spend 10k or so, so I can get something under 100k.

We have a 2019 Tiguan (OH's company car).

It's just gone in for its annual service and, for the second time, several flexible tubes in the engine compartment need to be replaced. Apparently, in an effort to appear more eco-friendly, VW has decided to use starch-based tubing, and rats and mice like to eat them. It's a big problem over here; the cars the most frequently damaged in this way are Renault, followed by VW.

Last time, the garage gave OH a spray can of rodent repellent, but it doesn't seem to have worked.

The posts that say “you don’t know you are towing” made me laugh. I had a Tiguan which I didn’t think was up to the job of towing two ponies and friend recommended a Touareg saying exactly that - you won’t know you are towing. I thought that was the most stupid thing anyone had anyone said. How could you not know you were towing?
Anyway upgraded to the Touareg and turns out is true. Love the car but hate towing, so bought a lorry.
Will be selling the Touareg soon. Just don’t need such a big car, but I do love it for motorway driving.

Tbf the Tiguan has done a great job. I thought I had an issue the other week when I felt the trailer jerking back, and convinced myself it was the saddles and 100kg of wood pellets in the boot altering the hitch height. Turns out it’s the trailer brake cables (despite it being serviced within the last 8 weeks!!). I’ve found the Tiguan tows two 15hh very well but I wouldn’t want to make a regular habit of it in reality, I’d prefer something heavier for towing two. So once Boggle is back up and running and doing stuff more regularly I’d always planned on changing.
