We've just got a new 3ltr VW Touareg, it came with a detachable tow bar. We're having major problems towing the horse trailer with it!! Basically we've had it checked by 4 different people now (including the actual VW lot) and they cant find out whats wrong. When towing, it makes an awful banging noise over bumps - I sat in the boot at one point and it sounded like metal hitting metal right underneath where I sat (where Id expect the towing bit to be). Otherwise, the vehicle is fine (just been serviced) and the tow bar has been checked by tow-bar specialists etc. We've definately ruled out the trailer being the noise.

We currently cannot tow with it as its that bad. We're at our witts end as to who to turn to next!! We're planning to take it back to VW next week and demand someone comes out with the trailer to hear it.

Just wondering if anyone else tows with this? If so, any problems at all???

Was the box empty at the time? Sometimes if the trailer hitch is higher off the ground than the ball on the car you can hear them tapping together over undulations in the road- this also sometimes happens if you have a horse that 'sits on the back rail' causing the front of the trailer to lift slightly. It is nothing wrong with the car or the trailer and is perfectly safe to travel with

It makes the noise with a horse and also without. The trailer hitch seems fine - we've had numerous people have a look at and nobody seems to think its too high. Horse has always travelled beautifully (although this has upset him!). The trailer is a Bateson which we've had for about 5 years - been towed most weekends no problem at all. Its very odd!!

If it is the same problem that we had it is not a problem with the trailer or the car per se, it is just a discrepency between the relative height that the towing ball and the towing hitch are set at (literally only a few mms difference!) It just means that when the suspension on the car adjusts to smooth out road bumps there is tiny gap created between the hitch and the ball- the metal slap you hear is when they knock back together.... We have a Discovery and and Ifor Williams 510 and it has been doing it on that since we had springs put on the back suspension of the Disco because the stupid air suspension broke

I had one of these tow bars and it did exactly the same thing ive now returned to my lovely grand cherekee jeep with fixed tow bar I must say I never trusted the detachable one.

sorry mine was on a BMW X3 I think the tow bar was too low for my ifor trailer so it banged all the time I never trusted the tow bar and would never have one again.
